The issue remains that Dexterity is now a 'God stat', superceding any other choice. All because of weapons being 'finesse'.
This is one of the biggest problems in roleplaying games. They call it One Stat To Rule Them All, and more than half of all roleplaying games out there seem to fall victim to it. Look to Hero System, Shadowrun, Star Wars, and d10 Legend of the Five Rings to see it at its worst.
The problem is it is too generalised. Speed, reaction, balance, hand-eye, manueverability, aim... it seems to apply to everything your body does.
D&D has at least resisted the mistake of using Dex to hit with most melee weapons, but as long as dex is an equally good option as strength, One Stat To Rule Them All will bring down D&D as it has all the others.

I'm user hyperbole, but there is a big problem. If Dex based weapons like rapiers and scimitars do as much damage as Str based longswords and equivalents, then the relative power of Str compared to Dex plummets further than it already was. I got excited about making a rogue using a longsword and medium armor. Then as I actually looked at putting points into Str and Dex...I suddenly realized that it was a horrible choice. I should just go Dex all the way. Then I realized that it's pretty much the same way for a fighter too. Except, without Str I can't carry my heavy armor. Oh wait--I'm a Dex-based character, I can just use light armor. See the problem?
Grats. You're now the fighter with terrible odds of completing feats of strength.
Who doesn't want to ever start a grapple (guess it's always Lethal combat for you, isn't it).
And who doesn't want to jump very far.
But at least you can dress like a rogue, swing a rogues weapons, and pretend to be half as skilled as a rogue.
I guess you win?

And has the same AC, hit chance and damage as the Str-fighter, but goes first thanks to higher AC and beat him at two equally important tasks for every task that the Str-fighter is better than you.
BTW, you can escape from grapple with Dex as well as with Str, so it's not even that But at least you can dress like a rogue
And get the same AC as the fighter out of it
swing a rogues weapons
And get the same damage as the Str-fighter out of it
and pretend to be half as skilled as a rogue.
Which makes you skilled in a whole lot more important things than you would ever be as a Str-fighter I guess you win?
Absolutely
