I believe 'a' and 'an' are for whether the word to the right has a vowel or a consanant as its first letter.
Nope. It's based on how the following word is pronounced, not spelled.
Thus, it is "an NPC", not "a NPC", because we pronounce "NPC" as "en-pee-cee", not "n'pick" And it is "a NAD", not "an NAD" because we pronounce "NAD" as "nad", not "en-ay-dee".
Weird, but true.
Oh, is that how you pronounce NAD? I've always said it "en-ay-dee" in my head when I'm reading because I read it as an acronym. But then, I don't know exactly what it is (not that fluent in "4E-ese"), so it's entirely possible I'm incorrect.
It stands for 'Non Armor-Class Defenses', meaning Fortitude, Reflex, and Will. I personally just call them 'secondary defenses'.
It's much more fun when a martial power attacks fort or reflex to say you kicked them in the NADs, though. :P

What's that saying "D&D is the only game where guys can talk about each others NAD's without sounding gay."
