I would highly recommend AGAINST doing that. Every level of bard you take will weaken your cleric spellcasting & undead turning ability, and every level of cleric will weaken your bardic lore, spellcasting, and music abilities. Are you trying more for "a decent bard" or "a decent support-type character" (which are not mutually exclusive)? If you want to be "a bard", then you're going to need to stay away from most other classes. For more info, what books do you have access to?

How exactly does the multiclassing make the indivual classes weaker aside from note reaching higher level spells and abilities as quickly? Its also worth mentioning ive never cross classed before.

That's exactly how it makes them weaker. Higher-level spells are more powerful; the sooner you can get them (in most cases), the better. Same goes for any class-level based abilities, like a rogue's sneak attack, a bard's music, or a monk's flurry & AC bonus. Your lack of books limits what you can do with multiclassing, since there are feats & prestige classes (PrC) that can combine class levels. For example, there's a feat in Complete Adventurer called Ascetic Hunter that let you add your monk & ranger levels together for certain abilities. In your case, the only thing that could combine the bard & cleric is the Mystic Theurge (DMG), which would let you increase your bard & cleric spellcasting simultaneously. The problem with it is that it doesn't increase any of your other class abilities, like music or turn undead. A bigger problem than that, though, is the inordinate number of bard levels you'd have to take to even qualify (6, I think). If you want the "support spellcaster" role, a better way to do it is sorcerer/cleric.

If you're going to play a bard, I'd highly recommend you take advantage of the Bardic Music class ability. (If not, find another class, since there's always going to be another class that can do something better than the bard can.) A good-aligned bard with the Words of Creation (Book of Exalted Deeds) and Song of the Heart (Eberron CS) feats can rack up sizable bonuses to attack and damage for the whole party, and you don't even need to be a great optimizer to put something like that together.
