Yes. If:
They cleaned it up. Added new classes. Added new maneuvers. Added new spells. Added multiclassing etc.
No I would not buy a game with just the Cleric, Fighter, Wizard and Rogue - but I do appreciate the core at the moment, and the style of play it encourages.

haha. boring... Next thread should be "Hunger Strike Until Developers Stop Having NEW ideas"
I would buy it for sure.
I would buy it just for the fact that I've never seen a playtest as cooperative and as attentive as Next is being, they deserve it even if it is unfinished and with errors.
I woulld buy it because this system is already cleaner and simpler then any other D&D system I've ever played. AS a matter of fact it's already better than most of some 35+ other roleplaying games I've ever played.
I would buy it because I want something new, and not something old and tired. Which is how I have felt about all D&D editions since my last game of D&D which was 4ed, and players we're so bored that we quit mid-combat, cracked out Deathwatch and started making characters.
I would buy it because it's already so versatile and easy to adapt, that I could easily build from the vast resevoirs of past editions a better version of any class, that would be funner for our group then anything else I have seen before.
But most of all I would buy it because that's not what you want to hear, and that my friend, is priceless.
My mind is a deal-breaker.

Would I buy 5e as it is now, with content "cleaned up" (assuming that means what I think it means...)? God no, but that's not because I don't like what I see.
It is simply too bare right now. There's not much there. It is still solidly a playtest. Even if I loved every mechanic (how ED work, number of spell slots, domains vs dieties, etc), there is far too little "meat" to warrant a purchase.
That said, overall I like what 5e has to offer so far, and I realized that the most recent packet was pushing the envelope pretty far deliberately, in order to get a reaction from the public. So the (quite numerous) things I didn't like from the recent playtest didn't turn me off from 5e, and as a designer I appreciate their methodology to their playtest approach, and actually give me more hope for the future of the game.
So long story short, no I wouldn't buy the game now, but if I were to use my designer-sense (like Spidey-sense, but useless for hero work), I would guess I'm going to really like the end product.
Essentials zigged, when I wanted to continue zagging.
Roll dice, not cars.

Oooh.... But let me tell you what I have sold, all previous editions of D&D except my latest set, 4ed., which was delivered to Goodwill.
My mind is a deal-breaker.

I voted yes because the rancor and hyperbole by many of the posters on any thread such as this is and will be silly. There's nothing quite as amusing as a nerd in the passionate throes of nerd angst writhing around in a froth of frustrated sweat and geek smugness. I especially like comments about cutting off fingers and never buying any DnD products, which does indeed render a person's opinion moot. Why would they market to someone who isn't a paying customer? But most silly of all is why would I pay for something I can get for free right now. Pretty pictures are fine when you're a tween, but I'm more concerned with the system, and that's shaping up to be very pretty indeed. And now for the lokiare finish...

Ooh I forgot the token dealbreaker comment. I will give someone an internet high five for a dealbreaker comment. I really wish the people whose deals have been broken would stop posting on the forums. If they don't it's a real dealbreaker for this guy.

I'll totally buy their products if they're good. That's exactly who they are trying to market toward, the fans that have been set aside, and the fans they have now. What I won't buy, is garbage, and that's exactly what the current playtest version demonstrates. If that's their foundation, they can keep their game. By telling them this, I'm giving them the opportunity to fix their errors. Now, what the hell is that last line about, exactly? Who cares about pictures and how pretty they are, exactly, and why? What are you trying to say?

As one of the fans they've set aside, I can say that they aren't trying to market to us at all. It's honestly been a bit insulting how little they've appealed to, or even understood, our segment.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.

"One should not attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity." I think they're trying, they're just failing miserably. I mean, we know what their stated design goals are, but whether or not they can achieve them depends on just how far they are willing to separate their heads from their rears.
Or they could just be d-bags jerking us around for spite. It isn't like people in the game design world haven't done that before. (Looking at you, Antonidas of Ninja Theory.)

I'm willing to let it be stupidity...it's just...it'd have to be LOT of it.
