There has been considerable consternation over the devil, demon, and celestial articles in regards to how these creatures fit in the cosmology. Some want a planescape type great wheel; some want a 4e type world axis; some want a version based on another setting; and still others want something new.
Given the modularity espoused by the designers as the goal of DDN, as will as their intention to support many settings, I don't think any of those are good directions. In the core products, the monsters need to be defined in terms of what they can do, what their place is on the prime material plane, and how they might interact with PCs.
It does not matter what plane a devil is from, whether or not it is engaged in the blood war, or even where it fits in the devil hierarchy. All those things can be given (and given differently in each setting) in the setting specific products. In the core I want to know what capabilities a devil has, what it might be doing in the world, and potential story hooks for it. Same goes for demons or celestials.
Pretty much this, there is a lot of room to keep traditional ideas about angels, devils, etc. (ideas present in all editions) without putting cosmology within there descriptions. It isn't even hard.

Genies are humanoid elemental beings, but you can't use them in "foot soldier" roles without significantly cheapening them. Genies are powerful individuals.
I know what you're saying, but there are the Jann (and tasked genies), who often form huge desert tribes, and genies often use others to fight for them/in their armies, like the Efreet use fire elementals, salamanders, firenewts, nightmares, devil mercenaries, and others.
Archons are like a militant elemental with a helmet, so easy to keep them, just call them something else, archons are LG exemplars.

I'm not sure how to interpret the results of the Celestial polls.
60% of people don't believe that the non-Angel good-aligned outsiders are an essential part of the cosmos, but 60% of people also believe that the Elemental Archons should either disappear/be renamed.
So, Elemental Archons don't get to keep their name, because they belong to the Celestial Archons, whom people generally agree aren't that important?

I would like suggest the idea of possible evil angels with some examples from fiction.. the Ghost Rider comic miniserie "Road to dammation" had got two evil angels, Malachi and Ruth... Gabriel, from Movie "Constantine". Other Gabriel, from the horrible serie B "Legion" Or the serie B saga "The prophecy" (with Christopher Walken and Viggo Mortessein) Or the Heaven-Hell in the TV serie "sobrenatural", do you rebember Uriel? Abaddon, from videogame "Darksiders" Gideon, from TV serie "Charmed"...(he was a Elder, like equivalent to archangel)

Could the Agathon (from Agathodemon = noble spirit) be a D&D outsider? (I don´t like the word eudaemon, too similar to demon). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agathodaemon And the sumerian igigi? (a ridicolous name, isn´t it?) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IgigiAnd annunakis? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anunnaki--- What celestial creatures from real world mithologies could be used like D&D outsiders? (but being enoughly politically correct).

I really love the Celestial Archons. The Angels and devas in this article are really nice too. I also really love the Celestial Eladrin of 3.5e.
