If WotC wants to get a clear look from RPG players as a whole, they really need to look to recruit from outside sites.
This outrage over Alignment Restrictions is only the beginning.

Such as? There are 70,000 playtesters as of September, undoubtedly more now.  Where would you have them get more from?  It isn't like the playtest is a state secret.  It was advertised nationally.

Playtest? When did this happen??
Children believe what we tell them, they have complete faith in us. I ask of you a little of this childlike simplicity, and to bring us luck, let me speak four truly magic words: "A long time ago...." (Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast)

Every roleplayer who is active on any RPG site is aware of the 5e playtest.  Where is this pool of roleplayers from outside sites you are referencing?

From my experience it seems like many have misconceptions about what the playtest is.  Many have overlooked it because they just thought it was an updated version of the current incarnation.  So there's plenty that haven't joined the party.  And I'm pretty active on the gaming boards.  I only found out about this through a friend whom happen to stumble onto this site.

Everyone else we told about it that plays with us right now hadn't heard about it before hand.

My old gaming group wasn't aware of it either.  The game store I frequent had heard about it, but thought it hadn't started for open testing yet.  My point is everyone I know that knows about it, heard about it from word of mouth.

Which sites were they advertising on?  There's probably a few I need to visit more often it could be.  And I thought the 70,000 subscriber number from GenCon refered to active insider accounts.  Not playtest.

My lord - are these people from the past? Have they not heard of the internet?

In just the past week I have seen discussion on D&D next on:
  • Twitter
  • Facebook
  • Reddit
  • ENWorld
  • The Paizo messageboards

Just a quick google search of "D&D Playtest" brought up pages of sites with information on the playtest.  I mean, are they supposed to send flyers out?  Pay for pop up ads that will undoubtedly be blocked by ad-blockers?

The playtest is what, 4 months old now?   I have non-roleplayer friends who know about the playtest because they hear about it from some of the above sources.

It was also reported in the New York Times online, the Wall Street Journal online, and a few other news sources.

As far as I can tell, people ocassionally drop into the forums to ask Wizards to spend a lot of money they don't have to achieve unrealistic results in order to make up for the fact that they didn't notice all the hooplah.

Does anybody even remember the 4th edition tv commercial they produced?  They spent a good chunk of change paying for a handful of spots and I don't think anybody even remembers it.  And it was only three years ago!!

In order to get real market penetration for a national product you need to be able to spend millions of dollars in advertising.  The D&D brand doesn't have that sort of power.
