Playtesting in Detail

By Mike Mearls

couple of weeks ago, we released the latest iteration of the playtest materials. I thought it would be useful to give everyone insight into how we manage feedback and the role your feedback plays in developing the game.

Talk about this column here.

So... there's a good chance PT3 is going to be rethought?

So help me Lucifer, if they make the Cavalier a class and not the Warlord, there will be hell to pay.

I agree. Your avatar is entirely appropriate.

You know, I wish there will come a day when my avatar is NOT appropriate in regards to discussion of D&D Next.

Looks like they took the advice Monte Cook posted on his blog.

Also in agreement, and does it count if the warlord has a different name?

Like: "Second, the number of players participating in the playtest steadily increases." Good to know that more and more people are participating. It means people either are liking what they see and telling their friends, or not liking what they're seeing and others are checking it out as a side-show attraction.

Like: " I usually look much more closely at anything where more than 10 percent of the people have given something a rating of 1 or 2."  Nice to know that it only takes 10% negative feedback to trigger the red alert. That is a much tighter percentage than I would've guessed.

Like: "With the core in place, we can either complete or kick off the design of a number of rules modules, such as alternative magic systems, tactical combat, mass battles, skirmish battles, planar travel, gritty wounds, and realm management. If it was in the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, it's something that we're likely to cover with a rules module." Very good to know. Tactical rules for those who want them. Mass combat and gritty wounds rules for those who want those. Looks like a win-win.

Dislike: "...so we'll launch something similar for prestige classes and feats." Prestige classes. No thanks. Dozens of corner-case, often redundant feats...also no thanks. Maybe they can get at least 1 of these 2 correct this go-round.
In fond memory of Mark "Wrecan" Monack.

I don't think it's valid to have a blanket opposition to prestige classes.  Sure, they had problems in 3.5, but they also had good parts.  The good parts can be retained, and the problem fixed.  We should not be in a state of mind where we say no without even trying, whatever the specific issue of the day happens to be.

This is true.  But, if it is anything like Wizard Traditions, they can use all the honeyed words they want, if the end product is garbage, I won't hesitate to call it so.  There were definitely some good things with Prestige Classes in the past.
