If your AC becomes 12+dex how does that make sense if you actually are wearing Armor? Extreme example, how does mage Armor cause you to ignore the fact you are actually wearing plate?

Basically it's a rules-lite version to achieve non-stacking bonuses. Instead of the 3E/4E version of "it gives you a +2 armor bonus", this simply replaces your AC with something else.

But how does that make sense or hypothetically could you cast mage Armor on the fighter and lower his AC so you can kill him?

Well first, you can't cast it on others, so using it as a debuff isn't possible.

And if you cast it on yourself knowing it'll lower your AC, well you kinda deserve what you get.

Basically if you are wearing plate, somehow having mage Armor cast on you allows a sword to go threw your Armor as if it wasn't there. This makes no logical sense at all

I get in terms of the game you are stupid if you do that and you can't cast it on others and a wizard wouldn't be wearing plate, but if he was it would cause the Armor to somehow not protect him from a sword anymore.

Think of it as a preventative measure to ensure a Wizard's AC is never higher than a Fighter with heavy armor, seeing as an extremely high AC is more or less supposed to be a class specialty of the Fighter.

Non-stacking just means "use the better value".  It doesn't suddenly drop your AC when you are wearing better armor, it just means you wasted a spell slot for nothing.

Mage Armor should probably say ''your AC becomes 12 + your Dexterity modifier, unless it is already higher''

Yeah, then it should say "your AC becomes 12 + your Dexterity modifier, unless it is already higher then it increases by +2"

"Hey guys, that was a good job we did killing the Lord of the Nine Hells. But man it's a good thing there weren't any oiled ropes or solid doors between us and him or we might have REALLY been in trouble."
