Oddly enough, my kids don't even know much about D&D.  I started them on Pathfinder.  Hopefully this bodes well for the hobby as a whole, showing that other companies can be successful with the right approaches and by giving the right audiences the right stuff to work with

Seeing as how Pathfinder isn't drastically different from D&D in the first place.  It's D&D 3.75, anyone will tell you that, and really, the only reason Pathfinder is so succesful is because they added on 3.5, the system that everyone loved so much and won't change from, and Wizards screwed up hard on 4e.  Hell I know people who play only Pathfinder because it plays just like 3.5 but with new fixes or errata.  I myself enjoyed Pathfinder for a time, and Congrats to Paizo, but I think it was an easy win.  4e is broken, but I like the game, not as D&D but as a tabble top war game.  I recently gave up on Pathfinder though, but only because I played in a game that kept restarting and I could never keep a character because of it and character death.  After my group's last 4e game, we switched back to AD&D2e and have tried out the Next playtest.  I'm getting a little bored with the playtest, and honestly, I don't see myself ever changing from 2e from now on.  My group of friends and I are 2e core players, and I think we're gonna stay that way.

4e essentials IS D&D 4.5.  Admit it.

I'm kind of running out on Pathfinder because I'm kind of tired of all the "baggage statistics and math" that goes with the game.  There are a lot of archaic concepts that needed to be dropped or streamlined (saving throws, skill system overhaul, etc).  You cannot beat the Adventure Paths though (except maybe by reducing the 1974 boring dungeon crawl-as-a-plot concept that still infects the system).

4e killed the D&D franchise for me after about 6 months and I got a weak "meh" from my players during the 5e playtest, so I guess we'll se what the future holds.  I'm hoping for the best.

In the meantime, it's been a great chance to check out other game systems.  We've done WFRP, Zombie rpgs (such as Outbreak Undead), The One Ring, Fiasco, and we've even done up a few more games of Call of Cthulhu (although as a GM, I DETEST inefficient scenario design that requires long prep times from the GM).

Anyways, Pathfinder carries the torch for us all.  In my house especially, my kids (under 10) don't know what D&D really is..they've only played Pathfinder.  I have mountains of D&D that literally threaten their lives (if they were to topple over on them), but they look at me like, "lets play pathfinder instead."  Sadly though, they're looking at the Wii and FreeRealms with more love...

I get the impression that D&D and pathfinder will be scrambling to reach the tops of very, very small heaps.

Yes, it was. Not sure why this is a big thing to admit. There was a 2.5 and a 3.5, nothing dirty about that either. PF could use a .5, but after a year of use of it's new shinny Mythic rules.
