That's my guess as well - given that the last playtest packet went out mid-August, I'd expect another mid-month release.

They missed the last deadline by two months, but they were working on Combat Superiority. I doubt it'll be on time, but not that late this time. Last week of October, close to November.

I also expect shardminds to be in the next packet, and for them to decide that the only playable class is the Tome of Battle Swordsage, and all characters must be a variant of that, using backgrounds and specialties.

And there will be a return to three alignments: Cool ranch, Nacho Chedder, and for a limited time Firey Habanero

Agreed, we should only have 4 types of chips. Lays, Ruffles, Pringles, and Corn Chips. Anything else is diluting the game. And no, corn chips should not come in different flavors under any circumstances, it ruins the experience!

I find it funny that the Mayans predicted events thousands of years in advance, but didn't see their own end coming at the hands of drought and deforestation.

I actually think the next packet will be  released tommorow on the 8th. Last time unless I am mistaken the last packet was released as a legend and lore and was released later in the day, if you look at the calander the 8th has the legend and lore being release later in the day. I may be jumping the gun (and probably am) but seeing as Legends and Lore are usually up pretty darn near midnight every monday and this one is a little late (though, it's not like he has to have a new one the second it turns 12) you might actually be right.

I predict next packet will be available by October 24th. As per today's October In The Works, the next season of D&D Encounters uses D&D Next, and the Session 0, "Character Creation" is on the 24th.
EDIT - *Derp*, from reading the In the Works about next Encounters season, I thought they were talking about moving to Next, but it looks like I was misinterpreting and they're trying to get aspect of 5e play in a 4e game environment, mini adventures each week with exploration, combat, and interaction. I doubt they'll be able to succeed in fitting enough into an Encounters session.

Disappointment!!!   They did a little to the monsters, but few if any have better "to hit" scores.   This means more house ruling for my games.

From the latest Legends & Lore article, it looks like this is in fact the entire packet. Mike Mearls said that they are planning to release smaller, more frequent packets that focus on one aspect of the game at a time. I, for one, like the sound of this.
Flag Xerxes13 October 9, 2012 5:13 AM PDT
Well I was holding off starting a playtest campaign until this packet came out. I expected some fixes to the characters, as well as level 1-10 progression, and was at least hoping for Wizard traditions. Guess I wasted my time.

Hopefully this "smaller packets, more often" will mean we get levels 1-10 and more build options sooner than the 2 month wait.

WEEKLY PACKETS!!!
Now there is an idea...
Flag SteeleButterfly October 9, 2012 5:20 AM PDT
I think weekly would be a bit too often for them to get useful feedback, and for them to analyse it thoroughly. Monthly would probably work.

It IS a good idea to concentrate on small pieces each time so they're not introducing too many variables for them to be able to figure out exactly what worked well and what needs more attention.
Flag mellored October 9, 2012 5:37 AM PDT
+1 for small incremental pieces.  If they give too much at once, they loose focus.  Better to get 1 thing right the 10 things (levels) wrong.

And yea..  1/month is about right.  It gives enough time for people to play it and surveys to be collected.

My weekly suggestion was an exaggeration and based more on what I want than what I think is a good idea. I want new content on a daily basis, but clearly that is neither feasible or smart.

Monthly seems good, HOWEVER I would have preferred the "smaller packets, more often" announcement before they gave out the packet. I have been stalling a playtest campaign waiting for a packet with lots of changes, and then I am handed this DM supplement and I ask "Where is the rest?" and they respond "O you wanted more, too bad we are only giving out small amounts now"

I feel a bit like Oliver Twist asking for more and getting laughed at. A heads up would have been nice.

So why don't you playtest the stuff we've got already?

It seems to me you are waiting for fixes that aren't coming, what ever those are.

I'm a little underwhelmed by the latest release, but I'm glad they didn't do anything to the classes yet. They also said that the wizard changes aren't likely to appear until they do some in house testing and it might take several packets before we see them.

I'd kind of like a list of changes rather than have to sift through everything to find them. I'm sure to miss something.

I was about to start an new playtest campaign but I saw the new packet was coming out so I pushed it back a few weeks in order to start with fresh materials.

I will probably go ahead and start with the current packet material, although I will be house-ruling a lot of fixes, which I don't like to do, hence waiting for the new packet. I generally don't like to house-rule too much, especially when trying to evaluate new material, but there are some things that just need to be fixed (AC/Hit).

I am a little upset that they didn't fix AC and Hit. It has been a complaint of most since Packet 2 came out. You can fix it either on the player side or the monster side, and since they gave us a revised Beastiary, it would have been easy for them to adjust monster AC and Hit.

New monster traits and revised exp are nice but they really missed a chance to fix a big problem many people are having.

Flag YouKnowTheOneGuy October 9, 2012 9:09 AM PDT
So, this packet is more 2.1 than 3, so next month we'll get 2.2 (theoretically). And I expect paladins. I never liked them until 4e, but w/ a holy avenger in the playtest? I wanna see what they do.
