Then by all means do that, and I'll do what's better in my opinion.

Meant the collective pride.

But as you were...

While blocking people would be a way to stop seeing their arguments, it would also prevent seeing the good ideas these same poster's often present.

The problem as I see it is that posts get off topic. Someone asks for advice, it is given, and then an argument starts over the advice given and the whole topic is derailed and the advice for the OP dries up and the thread continues along the lines of a bitter fued.

This is a place for discussion and debate, and sometimes arguement, but it is much more useful when that debate/discussion/argument is relevant to the thread. Please respect that the OP is welcome to accept and dismiss advice and that it isn't necessary to always defend your advice. The OP may well use your advice even if half a dozen others poopoo the idea. Also if you see something off topic in a thread that is irritating, please start a new thread to address the issue, rather than dragging the whole thread off topic.

Wouldn't reporting off-topic bickering to the moderators help much of this?

It might, but I don't report people. Period. End of story.

I'd like to think that despite the mudslinging we do, that we're mature enough to drop it at some point, which I've been trying to do lately.

I'm not sure that's the case.  If so, this 'discussion' likely wouldn't even be happening.  Considering the sheer volume of posts and topics here, we cannot expect the mods to find these issues on their own, and considering how an argument can run dozens of pages without anyone ever being willing to concede the point, we are contributing to the problem by not bringing it to the attention of people tasked with keeping the forums running smoothly.
I'm not going to start an argument with you about how you SHOULD report a derailed thread instead of participating in it, but I will point out that I WILL report bickering/name-calling/passive agressive malarky/bullying whenever I come across it.  If other posters (especially the long term and prolific one's) dont or won't, then there's no one to blame but ourselves.  That's a shame.  In real life, face to face arguments often have a better chance of coming to a reasonable conclusion, but nothing makes an unrepentant, arrogant expert quicker than the internet.

I live by the same principle both when speaking face to face and online. Actually, I'm much nicer online when in a debate or argument. Things aren't half as bad as they could be.

Edit: to be fair, I have no problem blaming ourselves, since we are the damn cause. No need to lie about it, really. But I'll be damned if I go tattle on someone because I don't like what they said. And don't get me started on my opinion of online moderators...

I look at it more in terms of civic responsibility or community service than tattling.
I owe a duty to portray the same behavior that I want to experience from others, but like in any community some problems are bigger than a single person, and that's where authorities come in.   Kind of like calling the police when your neighbors are still loudly partying at 3am, even after you went over and asked them nicely to keep it down.

You're talking to the wrong person on that front.

1. I don't call the cops.

2. I'd just join the damn party.

Problems are indeed bigger than a single person. But you know what? Turning to "mommy and daddy" authority figures just makes things worse.

I find this post to be a reasonable expectation.
