For an upcoming campaign, I'm working on a complex Wood Elf society... with lots of great houses / families for the players to navigate.

Problem is, I'm having a difficult time thinking up enough cool Wood Elf sirnames.  I'm looking for solid-sounding sirnames / family names / house names with a strong Wood Elf / Nature ( / Plant :p) theme and would greatly appreciate some help.

A favorite 3e PC of one of our group members has inspired one of the family names.  So I know Thistlefoot will be one (from his character Kalis Thistlefoot).  ...but many I come up with are sounding either cheesy or ...I dunno ...oddly too Dwarven lol (Oakheart jumped to mind, but I swear that sounds like it belongs on a Dwarf :p).

Any help GREATLY appreciated.  ...I'll have MANY houses / families represented, so I need all the help I can get!

I won't lie:  When I need names, I go shamlessly go rip off Tolkien.  He's developed so much of Quenya and Sindarin, it's easy to just come up with names in English, then translate them using online tools to Sindarin.

Lately, I've also been ripping off his Adunaic when I want something harsher sounding then the more melodic elvish languages.

Here's a Random Elf Name Generator created By Grey Starr and Dimitria Night-Starr if it can help. It even has syllab definition based off an article published in Dragon 251.

Its a great tool !

Exemple:

Anlar Nuruilquis
An = Hand
lar (-lirr) = Shine
Nu = Hope/Hopeful
ruil (-aruil; -eruil) = Noble
quis = Chant/Chanting

everytime I play a woodsy elf, I try to get away with the name "Morningwood."

INSIDE SCOOP GAMERS: In the new version of D&D, it will no longer be "Edition Wars." It will be "Edition Lair Assault." - dungeonbastard

If your naming convention is two words from the common that sound sort of natural together, you might steal a load of names off World of Warcraft or similar.  Try going to wowhead.com or some other game database and doing a keyword search for the Darnassus or Cenarion Circle factions.  You ought to get lists with hundreds of names like "Bladeleaf" and "Feathermoon" and so forth, as their tauren and night elf races use a similar convention for surnames.

I like @Plaguescarred's suggestion best. That name generator is excellent and the names feel more like D&D than LotR or WoW.

Find ELFQUEST... the description of what you're looking for and the names of the elves in the ELFQUEST graphic novels sound like a good match.
