I like to switch it up now and again.
5e, NEXT, DDN, D&DNext, I'll use DNDN.
This is a game of modularity. Guess that includes the name.

I'll combine some and call it DND5.

They've mentioned calling it just "Dungeons and Dragons" when it's released. What do people think of that idea?

Sounds like a great way to ensure that the community comes up with our own name for it instead of using the one they provide.
Seriously, though, you should check out the PbP Haven. You might also like Real Adventures, IF you're cool. | Knights of W.T.F.- Silver Spur Winner | | 4enclave, a place where 4e fans can talk 4e in peace.

It works great for the game once it's released. It is part of the attempt to reunify the community - to remind us that, regardless of edition, we are all playing Dungeons and Dragons.
But it's useless on these forums.
On these forums, we need to be clear which edition we are referring to (although for most purposes AD&D 1st and 2nd are comparable and 3.0 and 3.5 are comparable - although I do distinguish between them as well where necessary).
DNDN, 5N, 5E and DND5 all clearly indicate which edition we mean. "Dungeons and Dragons" does not because they are all Dungeons and Dragons (even 4E....).
I'm tempted to start talking about 5N.2 for the second packet, 5N.1 for the last packet (even 5N.0 for the closed playtest) - but I'm not sure people would understand what I meant if I did so - and if I have to explain it with each use I might as well write out which packet I'm referring to.)

I prefer %E! Becuase my honest hope and dream is to see D&D go back to its percentile roots! Just kidding!

It could also be NDND or ND&D or NDD - The NEW Dungeons & Dragons!

I think that was inevitable from the time they introduced numbered editions. DDN will be 5e no matter what it's called. The only way calling it "Dungeons & Dragons" will stick is if it actually does unite the fanbase.
Other potential titles I can see people calling it around the forums are: DDS = Dungeons & Dragons Stew. All the leftovers of past editions thrown together in one pot. D&D 4.-75 (from the less rational end of the 4e fans). D&D the GURPening (from those who think modularity will kill the game).

so why even play a fighter if you can play the paladin the exact same way behaviorally and get added power to boot. "Paladin" is about accepting better game-enhancing mechanics at the price of more rigid in game behavior.
Really? So it goes something like this?
Fighter: "I want to be a paladin." NPC: "Really?" Fighter: "Yes." NPC: "Very well." Starts reading from a holy book while still in-character "Do you accept having to choose and stick to the lawful good alignment, eventhough neither of us actually knows that it exists or what it is?" Fighter: "I do." NPC: "Do you reject good game balance because you accidentally rolled a high Charisma?" Fighter: "What?" NPC: "I don't know what it means either." Fighter: "Oh. Umm, ok I do." NPC: "In the name of all that is metagamey and broken, accept these better game enhancing mechanics." Fighter: "These what?" NPC: "Just get out there and try to fulfill a million different people's notion of good while not violating and part of any of them."

So the system is designed such that every single hit needs to be described to avoid confusion? Here's a scenario. The players are nudists, everybody in the world are nudists, it's not weird, it's totally normal in this land. They are naked and they fight drakes taking damage throughout, but healing up with surges. Later they meet the guy who raised the drakes.
Part 1: I didn't describe any of the hits. What does he see?
Part 2: Lets say I described the drakes as biting the players, yet they healed up. What does he see?

Personally I hate everything about "D&D Next" as an edition title, including DDN, DNDN and any such association.
Not to be confused with the fact that I do like the new edition, but that's a horrible title.
You're in luck, because DND Next is a project title, not the official one.
On topic, I say Next. Because I'm young and hip. Swag swag.

I refer to it as 5E, because that's what it is, trendy nicknames or not. However, some in my group have started to refer to it as DNDGH (D&D Greatest Hits), as it seems like a mash up attempt at all the editions in some way. I don't agree per se, but I understand where they get their perspective.
I prefer 2nd Edition AD&D. But I have played basic, 1E, 2E, 3.5, & 4E, and found all to be fun.
IF IT'S D&D, I'LL PLAY IT, NO MATTER THE EDITION.
Just roll some dice.
