I heard that they were going to include rules updates. Does this mean a few minor fixes, or full-on re-balancing? Is the format going to be different?
I ask this because I'm wondering whether I should get new books, or stick with my current 3.5 ones which are beaten but functional.

They had them at my FLGS today. Unfortunately, the books are in shrink-wrap, so I couldn't get a good look. But they look aweseome, the cover art itself is much better IMO than what they used to be with the less cluttered look on them.
I prefer 2nd Edition AD&D. But I have played basic, 1E, 2E, 3.5, & 4E, and found all to be fun.
IF IT'S D&D, I'LL PLAY IT, NO MATTER THE EDITION.
Just roll some dice.

Are there any fall-outey bits, or are the books just shrinkwrapped to be jerks about it?

I didn't notice any out-of-the-binding supplements. I might guess that they are shrink-wrapped for those who want to keep them as pristine as possible, but again that's a guess.
