"and no one expects the dnd ranger to have wizard spells."
Except the 1st Edition players.
I doubt it.
I agree, it doesn't fit, but, man, there was a certain panache about playing a 1st Ed ranger and blapping something with a magic missile.
lol fair enough.
I forget (and I am miles away from my 1st Ed PHB), but was the Giant Class class bonus damage feature (something else nifty) applicable to the ranger's spell damage, or only weapon attacks?

It's been way too long since I poked at 1e to remember that, man. :D I've slept since then.
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.

Slept since when and for how long?

Nice, I can't cop Zs the way I used to in my youth, if I sleep past 7 or 8 in the morning (even if I went to bed at 4:00am) I feel like I've won.

Melee only.
So - as written, it wouldn't even apply to bow/ ranged attacks.
The whole 'rangers as masters of the bow' thing didn't come about until later.
Which is why I find it so amusing when I run into people who think the 'range' in ranger has to do with ranged attacks (and I do know of people who really think that).

Carl
Tolkein merged these two ... origins of the word Ranger I think
late 14c., "gamekeeper,"
more recently 1660 -- man (often mounted) who polices an area

It's hit or miss, for me. Sometimes I sleep well for months at a time, sometimes I go months without a good night.

I sleep for around 8 hours but I stay awake for around 20 hours at a time. Figure that one out...

That's fairly normal I think.
Pre-electric lighting our body clocks were highly regulated by the day-night cycle, but nowdays we've thrown that control completely out of whack. I'm pretty sure 28 hour cycles in the absence of that control are standard. I know when I'm on holiday and don't have anything specific I need to get done I tend to get later to bed and later to raise every day.
