Eh- I just think it's an unnecessary, forced, and annoying game mechanic. I played 4E for about 2 1/2 years, and never liked it.

Except it's very easy to justify(using real life examples I might add), and unnecessary?
Alright then, how about this. In 3.x, how would you be able to defend your team as a straight Fighter?

And that was a failing in 3.x and earlier editions. However, that doesn't make Marking the best way to make a Fighter or Paladin a good protector. There are better ways and I feel they are headed in the right direction now. You may also consider, not everyone is going to agree with your love of the mechanic.

I'm open to other ways to replace marking. But it's pretty bad when I asked in another topic how a Fighter defends in 5e, and was told "Roleplay it!"

Or give the enemy disadvantage? Or make your ally take less dmg? Or stop an enemy in his tracks? Seems like some good options there
My two copper.

I'm all for those, but I would have liked it if they mentioned that, instead of just saying "Roleplay it."

"Just Roleplay it." Well that was the only way to do it until marking. Like I said Marking was a good step toward fixing that problem.

Those are an excellent start, but I'm worried about the fact that you can only do one of those options a turn and only to one enemy.

not to mention, as written, the Fighter currently gets a number of Defendery abilities that all vie for his Reaction per round. If he reduces how much damage a teammate takes, for example, he can no longer stop the Troll from rushing past him and pasting the Wizard.

I don't see why the Fighter in any edition "needs" to be someone who defends their team. Looking back, I never saw it as a shortcoming that the previous edition fighter couldn't Mark people, or restrict their movement, or what have you. I have always thought of them as the guy who can go toe to toe with the biggest monster the enemy has. I'm not sure how the fighter became "the protector" in 4E. (other than the fact they needed to shoehorn the Fighter into the newly created Defender Role)
I'm also against OA's returning, as I feel Marking/OA's bog the game down.
I can see a certain Specialty path or ability that you can *choose*, that would make you somewhat "defender-ish", but not to the point of the 4E fighter(warden/etc...).
