I'd like to hear some thoughts on tactics I am thinking about.  My DM has told me that as a rogue, I should be a combat expert--so I have brainstormed and a few thoughts have come to me.  If anyone else has any thoughts on tactics to add--I'd appreciate hearing them.

Razorwire Garrote - I plan to choke the life out of them as I rip into their throat so that all my allies can gain bonuses to attacks as they flail in hopes of freeing themselves.

Grease-Fire - I am also thinking about getting vials of grease and using them torches to create molotov cocktails that just won't go out.  I figure enemies will be confused and burning to death which'll allow my companions to take opportunity attacks as they stop-drop-and-roll.

Silk Rope Lasso - I want to try to lasso enemies to provoke attacks of opportunities for my fellow players.  It would knock them down (or at least leave them stumbling) and pull them away from party members.

Some solid group based tactics:

- I'd have to pop out the various guides on traps (it's been a long while) but I remember that if you take ranks in Craft (Traps) you can make some pretty ungodly-good traps, especially if your DM cooperates a little.  Use a bluff check, and fake being helpless/prey/whatever for something after setting up a huge trap.

- Dual weilding potions.  A couple of feats you can take there, but potions can add a lot of bang to a rogue setup.

- Grease-fires et al sound excellent.

- Try and split up enemy parties.  Like, if you see a huge group of orcs, maybe see if they're hungry.  Drive a deer past their encampment, and see if any of them chase it.  Generally look for opportunities to make hard combats easier.

2. Tank goes in and get surrounded by enemies.
3. Wizard cast fireball and blows them up.

First, an experience from a game I played in a few years back. Our DM didn't like 3.5 as a whole but liked parts of it. So he hands us a big ass rules packet for his modified FR campaign, complete with quotes from important NPC's on the front. I can't remember most of the HRs, just that some how gods like Cyric and Bhaal existed at the same time, despite the obvious problems there. In the end the game became a problem more because of the railroading than the HRs, but it ended with this classic line, after our ranger tried to disarm the strange woman following us WITH HIS BOW: DM: You just killed (insert random noble sounding name here) JP: Was she important? Jack: Dude, she's quoted on the front of the rules packet!

Cut the last encounter on your way out after dealing with the Darth. He's the BBEG. Treat him as such. Play up that Darth Revan is THAT much of a badarse. When the shuttle landed, I had no less than 13 JEDI MASTERS step off the shuttle. The PCs were slack-jawed. After the meetup with Bastila (as she's carrying Revan's body), only TWO jedi masters remained with her. Let me tell you, the player whining about not getting to fight Revan himself shut up pretty quickly when he saw that.

The Garrote will require a Weapon Specialization Feat I believe, as well as you being close and personal with the enemy, possibly spending much of the combat sneaking up behind them. Although a sneak attack that helps pin the enemy is a good idea.

The small fires is a good way to do some damage, there are items that do this in the PHB, including Lighting flasks of oil. While a good idea, ammo such as this can become costly in a long serries of fights.

Weapons that do trip attacks are great, I think a whip would be better then a lasso since it can be used to just do melee attacks against creatures that are too large for you to trip. Either way like the garrote it will require you to pick up an exotic weapon poficiency for each such wepon you add to your list.  You will also want to pick up the Improved Trip Feat.

Other tactical suggestions are:

Flanking enemies to take full advantage of Sneak Attacks, as well as giving the party a Flanking Bonus to hit is useful, And a rogue can use Hide, Sneak and Tumble to do this. If the enemy is too dangerous the Rogue can still do this while fighting defensively.

Also, if the group is fighting as one. If a creature is hard to hit, with a high AC, then a combination of flanking and Assisting Another is useful. Choosing the person with the highest Attack and Damage and assisting them (basically using your attack to make it easier for them to hit rather then to attack and miss yourself)

"Stand back and let the caster do it instead" is generally the only effective tactic for a non-caster to use in D20.
Confused about Stealth?  Think "invisibility" means "take the mini off the board to make people guess?"  You need to check out The Rules Of Hidden Club.
