So I am getting reading to go through the red box with my brother. Where do we go after that? Do we get to keep our characters? What do we buy after the red box to keep going? If we brought in a new player how would be play with him/her us being a higher lvl? Do we have to make a new character to play with him/her?

There are two things you will want after Red Box, the 'Heroes of the Fallen Lands' book and the 'Dungeon Master's Kit.' You'll also probably want to try to get a few more people in the game - a typical group consists of a Dungeon Master and 4-5 players. All players will need a character; although they don't all need to be the same level, you may as well just have everyone start off that way.
Eventually you'll want to branch out; the Dungeon Master will want the 'Monster Vault' and 'Mordenkainen's Magical Emporium' while players will enjoy the various 'Heroes' books with different races and classes.
If my post didn't help, try this thread instead.
4e D&D is not a "Tabletop MMO." It is not Massively Multiplayer, and is usually not played Online. Come up with better descriptions of your complaints, cuz this one means jack ****.

Well, yes and no. I would not recomend playing a character at the same time as DMing. What several groups like to do is alternate who DMs, that way you have chance to do a little bit of both.

Yes, the DM can. But do not unless you are short on players, like me. The DMPC should NEVER make decisions or influence the other party memebers conciously(e.g. if the characters are trying to save him thats fine, but if he's briging the other PCs that's a no no). In fact, the DMPC should not talk at all. Ever, unless spoken to. Just use it to balance combat.
We summoned a devil once. All we used was the D&D books, too. It was pretty kwazy.

I'd take coal. Heating your house is expesive, and engery cost arn't going down.

First, an experience from a game I played in a few years back. Our DM didn't like 3.5 as a whole but liked parts of it. So he hands us a big ass rules packet for his modified FR campaign, complete with quotes from important NPC's on the front. I can't remember most of the HRs, just that some how gods like Cyric and Bhaal existed at the same time, despite the obvious problems there. In the end the game became a problem more because of the railroading than the HRs, but it ended with this classic line, after our ranger tried to disarm the strange woman following us WITH HIS BOW: DM: You just killed (insert random noble sounding name here) JP: Was she important? Jack: Dude, she's quoted on the front of the rules packet!

Cut the last encounter on your way out after dealing with the Darth. He's the BBEG. Treat him as such. Play up that Darth Revan is THAT much of a badarse. When the shuttle landed, I had no less than 13 JEDI MASTERS step off the shuttle. The PCs were slack-jawed. After the meetup with Bastila (as she's carrying Revan's body), only TWO jedi masters remained with her. Let me tell you, the player whining about not getting to fight Revan himself shut up pretty quickly when he saw that.
There's so much you can do with insanity, especially when it has alot of resources.
1. Cleric cast protection from fire on Tank. 2. Tank goes in and get surrounded by enemies. 3. Wizard cast fireball and blows them up. 4. ??? 5. Profit

If there's a gaming store in your area, check and see if they are running "D&D Encounters" on Wednesdays and try to get into that. I'd also recommend asking around if anyone is interested in playing/learning D&D, particularly friends you prefer to hang out with.

I agree with Arcane_Guyver's advice on what to buy next. The DM's Kit has a decent adventure that is intended to be run after the Red Box adventure (although they are only linked by geographical proximity). You'll need to convert your red box characters slightly to align them with HotFL, or better still just make characters from HotFL to start with. I'd try to get at least one more player; you can have a fun game with just one player and a DM, but you get a much more interesting dynamic with more than one PC. You'll need to scale down encounters to make sure they are suitable for a smaller party, probably worth starting another thread here if you need help in doing that (someone could probably give you recommendations for each encounter int he Red Box). If you have just one or two players, then having the DM run an NPC companion can be a good idea. In addition to CHIA's advice above, I'd recommend the following:
- Use a monster stat block, not a full PC build
- ..but give them second wind and healing surges
- Keep their powers simple and few in number
- Make sure that they balance out a missing role in the party in this order of priority: leader, defender, striker
