That said: you don't need Arcane Implement Proficiency, nor necessarily Versatile Expertise. Hybrid rules state that you can use an implement from  either class for the powers of both classes. Which means you can use an Holy Symbol for Sorcerer's powers, and stick with 1h+shield. That also allows you to pick Devoted Protector's Expertise, which works with weapons and Holy Symbols, and grants your allies a flat +1AC bonus just because you're wearing a shield. In case you rethink and go for straight Paladin, a HS means extra damage on your punishment (which is not weak), in the form of Symbol of the Champion's Code.




Weak mark? Why yes, the Hybrid Pali mark is weak...for this character, its 4 damage IF AND ONLY IF the enemy violates the mark. In practice, getting +8 damage out of my blackguard is fairly easy. 

However, your recommendation of Devoted Protector's Exp saves me 2 feats  I can't even begin to tell you how happy that makes me...happy enough to, at the very least, give this a shot.

While there is little to be said about the value of force damage, it also means I can not exchange my Sorc powers for Fire, Cold, Radiant ect until later in the game. Also complicates feats that empower such damage types.

Power suggestions for the Paladin|Sorcerer version:

- Ardent Strike as your Paladin at-will: a useful, limitless way of Sanctioning an enemy and thus playing with your punishment;
- Valorous Smite (Paladin) as your E1: it's a mass marking skill! Either everyone suddenly turns on you (and you're a plate and shield guy with Sudden Scales and stuff, so good luck), or you're gonna have a big holy explosion in seconds; more importantly, a Paladin E1 frees your slot for...
- Flame Spiral (Sorcerer) as your E3: it's the Sorcerer close power, and considering you're half defender, the chances of double tapping into it are amazing; run into the enemy formation, drop a mass Sanction with Valorous Smite (or Call of Challenge, see further) and AP for Flame Spiral; now they can stick to you and double tap into the Spiral damage, or try to run away and deal with someone else violating your mark, falling right into a nice catch-22;
- Majestic Halo (Paladin) as D1: another mass marking power, which requires you to simply be there beside enemies, which kinda is your place anyway;
- Thunder Leap or Glacial Armor (both Sorcerer) as D5: either a close attack with potentially double damage (best case, jump on your place and hit everyone twice), or a nice buff on yourself for a catch-22 - hit you and take your Cha as cold damage (easily exploitable later on) or attack someone else and eat your punishment;
- Call of Challenge or Bless Weapon (both Paladin) as your U2: mass marking again, see why I was saying it's loads of damage, it's easy to turn it into a solid source of constant aoe; or a very good buff for one encounter, hit, damage, crit chance;

As you see, the idea is to set up as many marks as you can, since your punishment takes no actions and can damage any number of foes at any time. By the way, the hybrid paladin punishment originally required an Interrupt - it does not, not anymore - so anything that's under Challenge or Sanction can take damage on the same turn, no questions asked. Mark damage can be stellar, if you set up things right
And for the rest, obviously, you spread around some love with Sorcerer's powers and your breath, sometimes creating some good catch-22.
