Isn't all of this solved by playing an elven STR based fighter instead of DEX based?

If you are playing DEX based, stick to finesse weapons.  Nobody's shoving a longsword into your hands.

I think that's a good way to do it. I do think elves should either be given the bonus to finesse weapons, or allowed to use Dex with longswords, too. I've always thought of elves as nimble and dexterous, so if the longsword stays, they should be able to use dex.

this makes no sense.

A weapon being able to be used with finesse comes down to the weapons design itself (length, size, weight...)

For what it's worth, in previous editions (one of the 3's) Elven proficiency was with longsword OR rapier, and my friends and I have kept it that way since. It really makes the most sense to have the pair of options (altough a cleric MIGHT tend more to longsword cuz of Corellon).

I say let elves use Dex or Str for longswords without saying its finessable and call it day.  They gain good reasons to use the weapons that match their history, and there isn't any worry about two-weapon fighting with dual longswords.

I definately do not want to see elves using rapiers as the defacto racial weapon, I'd much rather the mechanics be altered to make the history work.

Drow - 1-handed finessable swords and whips and hand Crossbow

This covers swords for fighter types, whips for clerics, and hand crossbows for all.  Even the drow arcane guard can keep his spiked chain.

I actually feel simply adding rapier to the list (for elves) works best... Most will end up using a short bow and a rapier, with their fighters using a longbow and longsword... Clean, simple... Let's not forget... Only Elven fighters get to use a longbow... THE weapon that seems most iconic to the race... Just my (revised) 2 cents...

I'm seriously considering creating an "Elven longsword" that is made by Elven smiths, and designed to be used as either a Str or Dex weapon. That would be the default Elven "longsword" proficiency. End of problem.
In memory of wrecan and his Unearthed Wrecana.

5e should strongly stay away from "I don't like it, so you can't have it either."
