Hi there, I don't know exactly where I'm supposed to post this so I thought here should do. I am thinking of getting into DnD. I have bought the latest red box starter set, and really enjoyed creating characters with me and my friends. However, before I invest any more into 4e, I want to make sure that the next edition that is currently being play tested will not be released within the year or so. How likely is this? should I wait before buying player handbooks, DM handbooks etc? Any advice would be fantastic. I'm new to rpgs which is why I didnt hesitate in buying the red box.
Thanks for any advice.

its up to you. the new edition is completely different from 4e, so if you like 4e, you can stick with it and buy the books very cheap. most people seem to agree that next years gencon will likely be the 5e release, so it could be out in a year. personally, i wouldnt want to wait that long, but if it matters to you, you could hold off. just keep in mind, a lot of people (myself included) still play versions from the 70s, so just play what you like

I would go ahead and by everything that you can find right now. When 5e comes out, you could buy the set and maybe combine the two? is that legal?

Depends on the style of the classes you like.  Essentials has (for the most part) easier to build and play classes.  Apparently they have more of a "retro" feel.  They're also at a pretty decent price point.  The core book (AEDU) classes can provide a bit more complexity.  They're both compatible.  I like them both.  YMMV.

Maybe get a month of Insider and check it all out to see what you want.
Wizards of the Coast can suck it.

Ok, should I not bother with the players handbook and dm guide just yet then?

as you are starting to wear out the red box, have the dm buy the dm kit. it has an adventure in it with tokens, like the red box. by that time you will need to convert the red box pcs over; notes on that are at the bottom of this page in doc format

wizards.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/...

once you have the dm kit and a players book, your dms next purchase should likely be the monster vault; it again has another adventure. from there there are a lot of options, and you can just go with what interests you

you will likely want lots of tiles and map packs, but be warned: they are heavily addictive.

Haha ok great, so at the moment I don't need to purchase the core rules, players or dm handbook? That's great. As the dm il grab the essential dm kit, and see what's what from there. Thanks

You can also download most of the PHB classes for free in PDF since WOTC republished rewritten versions of those that anyone can get.

Here is the cleric for instance.
