I wil be participating in a campaign shortly that is set in Ravnica, a world of Magic the Gathering. Anywho, I could use aid from those that traverse both worlds, D&D and MtG. A controller is what the group needs based on the party having a paladin (uncertain if CHA or STR based), fighter, artificer, ranger (Unsure if bow or swords).

The guilds I am able to represent are
  • Orzhov -B/W
  • Izzet - U/R
  • Selesnya - G/W
  • Boros - R/W
  • Azorius - U/W

I guess I am struggling to come up with controllers that fit these guilds. I prefer to hybrid just for the challenge and only half need be controller. Some help with fluff would be greatly appreciated.

Ideas:

  • Selesnya Shaman/Wizard
  • Orzhov Avenger/Wizard
  • Azorius Psion/Avenger

The obvious would be an Izzet wizard, maybe multiclass Artificer? They like their fantasy steampunk environments.  A Boros Fighter/Invoker would be cool as well. The Selesnya is a very good idea, however couldn't you just go druid (I don't have the PHB2 but I think the druids are controllers, correct me if   I'm wrong on that).  For the Orzhov maybe a Rogue/Wizard? They are obviously fixated on money. Or you could go full Wizard and be one of the Orzhov's lawyers.

First, an experience from a game I played in a few years back. Our DM didn't like 3.5 as a whole but liked parts of it. So he hands us a big ass rules packet for his modified FR campaign, complete with quotes from important NPC's on the front. I can't remember most of the HRs, just that some how gods like Cyric and Bhaal existed at the same time, despite the obvious problems there. In the end the game became a problem more because of the railroading than the HRs, but it ended with this classic line, after our ranger tried to disarm the strange woman following us WITH HIS BOW: DM: You just killed (insert random noble sounding name here) JP: Was she important? Jack: Dude, she's quoted on the front of the rules packet!

Cut the last encounter on your way out after dealing with the Darth. He's the BBEG. Treat him as such. Play up that Darth Revan is THAT much of a badarse. When the shuttle landed, I had no less than 13 JEDI MASTERS step off the shuttle. The PCs were slack-jawed. After the meetup with Bastila (as she's carrying Revan's body), only TWO jedi masters remained with her. Let me tell you, the player whining about not getting to fight Revan himself shut up pretty quickly when he saw that.

The Orzhov's structure as a church would make me tempted to play an Orzhov Invoker/Cleric.

The PHB2 druid is a little bit of an odd fit for the Selesnya with its focus on shapeshifting (although it strikes me as flavorful for a Gruul caster), but consider the Protector Druid from Heroes of the Feywild.  The ability to create plant overgrowth for difficult terrain definitely feels like basic Selesnya magic.  Alternately, you can make the stats line up perfectly in Wis/Con or Wis/Int as a Shaman/Invoker.  And if you really have the urge to play a Seeker (or, probably better, a Seeker|Ranger) or Hunter, Selesnya is the most intuitive place for that.

It's a little hard to imagine a controller character coming out of the Boros, but Wizard/Warlord could work out, especially if you emphasize lazy powers on the Warlord side.  Some Wizard powers might just need fluffing to fit the guild themes, but that's not too difficult.

Azorius is a little more restrictive, but an appropriately-toned specialist Mage like an Enchanter might feel like an Azorius Lawmage.  A Telepath Psion focused on action denial could work, too.

Izzet pretty much needs to be Int primary, since it's really what the whole guild is about.  I agree that Wizard/Artificer is good, but a pure Psion could be fun, especially if you emphasize that you power is pure mental force, rather than magic as otherwise recognized in the game world.

I'm suggesting a lot of leader hybrids because in a group of 5, most artificers will be happy with a little healing assistance so they can focus on their awesome buffing powers.

This is the build I am planning to use. The Githzerai make a likely Vedalken race in the MtG world of Ravnica. I will play it as an Azorius lawyer/investigator type with a niche for bringing people to justice through the courts. Back story ideas would be appreciated. Also, anything terrible about my build (Other than the incongruous hybrid)? Can you think of any feats that are must haves in the coming levels? What would be a good choice for a paragon path? Keep in mind that I would like to focus on control over striking.
