What class/hybrid would you suggest, that would qualify for the following criteria:
- Melee, a striker (not on the role, just tons of damage).
- Mechanically interesting: having a distinctive (or more) feature that is fun to mess with and use.
- Fun to play: not an one-trick-pony, having many choices to select from and use, depending on the situation.
- Versatile: not needing specific setups, being strong in stiking if the opponent is a single huge mountain of muscle or a horde of myriad undead rats.
Any ideas?

What level? Perma-stealth pixie is fun. Monk/evermeet warlock with a staff of the traveler is fun too.

F-111 Interdictor Long (200+ squares) distance ally teleporter. With some warlord stuff. Broken in a plot way, not a power way. Thought Switch Higher level build that grants upto 14 attacks on turn 1. If your allies play along, it's broken. Elven Critters Crit op with crit generation. 5 of these will end anything. Broken. King Fisher Does an excellent job at keeping an enemy disabled in a few ways. Strong. Boominator Fun catch-22 booming blade build with either strong or completely broken damage depending on your reading. Very Distracting Warlock Lot's of dazing and major penalties to hit. Overpowered. Pocket Protector Pixie Stealth Knight. Maximizing the defender's aura by being in an ally's/enemy's square. Yakuza NinjIntimiAdin: Perma-stealth Striker that offers a little protection for ally's, and can intimidate bloodied enemies. Very Strong. Chargeburgler with cheese Ranged attacks at the end of a charge along with perma-stealth. Solid, could be overpowered if tweaked. Void Defender Defends giving a penalty to hit anyone but him, then removing himself from play. Can get somewhat broken in epic. Scry and Die Attacking from around corners, while staying hidden. Moderate to broken, depending on the situation. Skimisher Fly in, attack, and fly away. Also prevents enemies from coming close. Moderate to Broken depending on the enemy, but shouldn't make the game un-fun, as the rest of your team is at risk, and you have enough weaknesses. Indestructible Simply won't die, even if you sleep though combat. Sir Robin (Bravely Charge Away) He automatically slows and pushes an enemy (5 squares), while charging away. Hard to rate it's power level, since it's terrain dependent. Death's Gatekeeper A fun twist on a healic, making your party "unkillable". Overpowered to Broken, but shouldn't actually make the game un-fun, just TPK proof. Death's Gatekeeper mk2, (Stealth Edition) Make your party "unkillable", and you hidden, while doing solid damage. Stronger then the above, but also easier for a DM to shut down. Broken, until your DM get's enough of it. Domination and Death Dominate everything then kill them quickly. Only works @ 30, but is broken multiple ways. Battlemind Mc Prone-Daze Protecting your allies by keeping enemies away. Quite powerful. The Retaliator Getting hit deals more damage to the enemy then you receive yourself, and you can take plenty of hits. Heavy item dependency, Broken. Dead Kobold Transit Teleports 98 squares a turn, and can bring someone along for the ride. Not fully built, so i can't judge the power Psilent Guardian Protect your allies, while being invisible. Overpowered, possibly broken Unnamed Avenger|Runepriest/Hammer of Vengance Do lot's of damage while boosting your teams. Strong to slightly overpowered. Charedent BarrageA charging ardent. Fine in a normal team, overpowered if there are 2 together, and easily broken in teams of 5. Super Knight A tough, sticky, high damage knight. Strong. Super Duper Knight Basically the same as super knight, only far more broken. Mora, the unkillable avenger Solid damage, while being neigh indestuctable. Overpowered, but not broken. Swordburst Maximus At-Will Close Burst 3 that slide and prones. Protects allies with off actions. Strong, possibly over powered with the right party.

you're going to have to give more leeway I think.
1. Melee, a striker with tons of damage is the opposite of number 4. Most strikers with tons of damage are focused into doing tons of damage and although the best are versatile they don't do well at changing attack types. In the sense that a ranger is excellent at focusing down one monster at a time or maybe 2. However they are not good at using AoE powers, they have none really. The rogue has some blasts but none do much damage and again are excellent at focusing down one target.
Controllers on the other hand are very good at multi target combat, wizards have a blast or burst at every single level they can pick a power. So they make excellent characters to be able to stop a horde of rats. They also have pretty good single target stuff, however they are not big on damage and they are not melee. There aren't many controllers who are melee focused because being melee doesn't allow you to control much of the battlefield, you can however control mobs around you quite well.
Which brings us to examples like fighters who are defenders. They have excellent control of mobs around themselves, they have bursts, can do striker level DPR and have a variety of builds that can be very different from one another. (compare a brawler vs a polearm momentum build for example) Same for the Paladin.
So I think you should go with the fighter or a hybrid fighter | X. Or a paladin maybe ? That should give you pretty much what your looking for. However I guess it would need to fit 2 and 3 which are more your decision than what build we suggest.

Barbarian can do decent damage to one target, or bust out bursts or blasts to deal with swarms. Rages can give you conditional interesting little mechanics. They are mobile, and they are not one trick ponies except maybe at lower levels where charging is typically more efficient than anything else you can do.

that's true Mengu, a barbarian could do well to fit the OPs needs.

Swordmage|Warlock with aegis of assault.
You have a sliding at-will that can be tricked out in a variety of ways, and a close burst attack. At paragon (or in heroic if human), you can easily pick up one onf several interesting ranged attacks.
You get off-turn actions in most rounds.
You get access to teleports and dominates.

Swordmage|Warlock Barb|Sorc Avenger|Runepriest Avenger PMC Ranger (Mia). Monk|Warlock (or Monk/Warlock)
Though it sounds like you really want a sort of Gary Stu character, and those just don't happen in 4e. 4e rewards specialization.

I'd suggest a Swordmage|Warlock or Thaneborn Barbarian|Cleric.
