No, they didn't.

C8: Did TSR really try to trademark the word "Nazi"?

No, though that is a popular rumor, especially among people who are looking for any excuse to hate TSR. This incident comes out of the Indiana Jones RPG. The statement in question actually says "NAZI(TM)*; (TM) & (C) LFL 1984; *trademarks of Lucasfilm, Ltd. used under authorization." In other words, TSR has never made any claim to a trademark on the word "Nazi," but Lucasfilm, Ltd. has made such a claim.
However, before anyone decides to start railing on Lucasfilm, realize that the trademark in question is of the word and the associated artwork. That is, there is no claim that the word "Nazi" by itself is a trademark, but there is apparently a trademark on the word when accompanyied by the specific artwork that was seen with it in that module.

Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

I suspect this should be a quote, and so a source would be nice.  However, for our purposes, it is a quibble.  Even highly generic terms may be subject to copyright or trademark claims, and so when Herolab says they have left such parts out, we have to worry about how useful the remainder will actually be.
So has anybody actually used this product?

Footnote on Wikipedia

However, your point stands. The amount of material that HeroLab will be "able" to keep might be significantly less than it is currently using.

Here are the PHB essentia, in my opinion:
  • Three Basic Rules (p 11)
  • Power Types and Usage (p 54)
  • Skills (p178-179)
  • Feats (p 192)
  • Rest and Recovery (p 263)
  • All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)

A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

Wow, I haven't been here in a long time.  Mainly because the forum seemed to be switching over to discussions of DDN.  I'm not switching over to DDN when it comes out.  My group is perfectly happy with 4E.  My current campaign, which I DM, is 4E and just kicking off.  I have an amazing group of role players.  We sat down to discuss it, took a look at the playtest materials, and decided that we wanted to stick with 4E.  We still have a blast with 4E, we understand it, and we've spent a lot of money on 4E prducts.  So we'll stick with what makes us happy and what we've already invested in.  My group is older, has limited time to game and a limited hobby budget.  We'll stick with what we know we like, rather than a rehash of previous versions.  DDN holds no interest for anyone in my group.  This is the first time that I haven't switched to the new edition and I've played every edition.  I

My knowledge of German is a bit sketchy, but I'm fairly sure that "brennennacht" translates to "Burning Night," so this might all together mean "Book Burning Night," given the lines that this conversation was going in.  But don't quote me on that.

Also going to chime in and say that I'm definitely sticking with 4e.  I had no love for 3.5e when I left it, and 4e was just a far better fit for our group.  It gave everyone something cool to do, and it actually got our group out of certain ruts that 3.5 left us in (people always playing certain races to avoid mechanical penalties, playing only certain classes to avoid being too squishy or too overpowered, etc.), so it was a beneficial change.  Plus, we didn't have to worry anywhere near as much about the players who know how to optimize having to balance building a good PC with building something that won't overshadow another player's PC.  4e just has far less swing between what an optimized PC can do and an unoptimized PC can do, and the fact that point-buy and standard arrays are available over rolling also helps dealing with our friend who frequently fudges his stat rolls.  It's just a much cleaner system for our group.

Also, for those who espouse the need of the character builder, I have to say that I've never seen anything but problems from having players in my group who insist upon using it.  There's been frequent mistakes in what gets actually posted to the power cards as to things like damage, miss-printed effects, and a variety of other failings that have made it completely untrustworthy in my view.  It's only ever proven valuable in so much as we have a few people in our group who have atrocious handwriting, but even then, we've always had to check and double-check it with the books, to the point that it honestly wasn't worth it to use it.

First, an experience from a game I played in a few years back. Our DM didn't like 3.5 as a whole but liked parts of it. So he hands us a big ass rules packet for his modified FR campaign, complete with quotes from important NPC's on the front. I can't remember most of the HRs, just that some how gods like Cyric and Bhaal existed at the same time, despite the obvious problems there. In the end the game became a problem more because of the railroading than the HRs, but it ended with this classic line, after our ranger tried to disarm the strange woman following us WITH HIS BOW: DM: You just killed (insert random noble sounding name here) JP: Was she important? Jack: Dude, she's quoted on the front of the rules packet!

After the meetup with Bastila (as she's carrying Revan's body), only TWO jedi masters remained with her. Let me tell you, the player whining about not getting to fight Revan himself shut up pretty quickly when he saw that.

Star Wars Galaxies? Didn't they shut the servers down?

yeah thats what happened. but half a year before it offically ended they came out with an announcment saying it was going to end. In the months after that annoucment my server suffered a massive drop in the number of active players. Our population pre annoucement had been well over 100 active players. that dropped to less then 40 in the following months. i went to starsider for the last month of the game and omg. It had once hosted over 500 players. you couldnt even go to mos eisly because it was so packed, the lag there was terriable. by the time i showed up we might have been lucky to break 200 players, thats with the refugees from the other servers. my point is that when people think somthing is going to end they panic and make a dash for the nearest exit. thats what i dont want to see with 4e. i know its not a video game like swg but i have a sneak suscipion thats exactly whats going to happen. but im getting off topic so yeah. (plz admin gods dont strike me down)

As a pre-CU SWG player, hearing you imply that 500 people on a server was a lot made me laugh. Laughing They killed the game by trying to reclone it into its biggest competitor (and losing what made it popular in the first place) and then discovered that the clone wasnt stealing that other games population. evenually it widdled itself down to nothing.

This is an interesting comparison however:

SWG (orginal) and pre 4e both had a very small but heavy loyal market
SWG (NGE) and 4e both attempted to remodel itself onto something its developers felt would have a greater income potential (W.O.W. and tabletop Wargames) Neither were truly successful at the attempt, althoug they did gain some customers.

The difference between 4e and SWG (NGE) was that with 4e they blended two different markets into a new product creating a new customer base (wargaming for roleplayers) SWG just attempted to steal another MMO's population without providing anything other than the star wars label and flat out failed. Wotc is in a bind now in that Pathfinder took advantange of the lost 3.X players and catered to them. They are going to have a difficult time getting them back.
