Is there a way for a dwarf to do this? I have an idea for a (mostly) non-magical crafter of magic items, but I need to boost UMD as much as possible and be a dwarf to pull it off.

And just how is that supposed to work?

I'm having a lot of trouble with the "non-magical rafter of magic items" concept and what UMD may do to help that concept.  I could mention the Artificer class but don't know what you're thinking.

Steven, if I figure out how to do it, I'll post it in CO either tomorrow or Sunday. An artificer dip is integral, though.

Maat, I didn't see a way for a dwarf to do so in that list. Did I miss it, is it nigh impossible, or is it just not listed?
Alternatively, is there an Able Learner-type ability for dwarves so that I don't have to pay 2 skill points to cross-class it?

I know about 1.5 % of your non-core rules (3.5), but historically, there have to be exceptions or rules.  The dwarves made all the magical weapons for the gods, the dwarves even made Sif's golden magical hair as a gift.  Back in the 1e days, even they said that!  And back then, dwarves were "only fighter class" as a race.  And if the NPC's were clerics, they were limited to like level 5 or something.

So, make a rule, figure it out.  Mix in the racial 3.5 stone/metal thing of dwarves to craft, or something, and allow them to at least assist in the crafting of magic items of that type.

I don't have any great ideas, somebody else will have to draw on my post and fight or add to it.

Battlesmith (Races of Stone, p97) gives you craft magic arms and armor without being a caster. A forge of Thautam (Races of Stone, p167) lets you create items as if you had craft magic arms and armor.

A forge of flames (Races of Stone, p167) can provide any spell of the fire descriptor for item crafting.

Imbue item (Complete Arcane, p8) allows a 12th-level warlock bypass spell requirements for crafting items. I don't know if that's too magical.

There's the apprentice feat (Dungeon Master's Guide II, p176), though it's a bit funny.

Already using it.  The problem is that any type of enhancement other than the numbers generally requires a spell or power.  A mundane dwarf can't pull that off, and I'm trying to make this one completely self-sufficient (which is why there's an Artificer di[ for UMD).

A forge of flames (Races of Stone, p167) can provide any spell of the fire descriptor for item crafting.

That's helpful, thank you!

It is.  I'm looking for 5 levels of base classes and 15 of PrC.

Didn't your link say it requires spellcasting?  If artificer counts, then I can use it, I guess.  I just don't have the DMG2.

The benefits of the feat vary depending on who you're apprenticed to. “Spellcaster” isn't noting that you need to be a spellcaster, it's noting that you must apprentice yourself to one.
