I'm really shocked how hated this playtest is.

I am "very satisfied" as is my entire group.  Literally, the only thing I dislike so far is the existence of daily resources, but that's not a dealbreaker and never has been.  Why is this game fitting us so perfectly, but is evidently just offending everyone else?

Same here, but I also selected 2e as my fav system.  I'd bet that most people who hate it selected 4e as their fav.

I'm surprised that anyone likes it really.

It feels like a mishmash of the worst parts of every system.  I've played and enjoyed every flavor of D&D out there over time, but man do I hate the feel of 5e.

One thing that strikes me is the more recent the forum account, the more likely they like 5e.  The older the more they resist it.  Check it out sometime, it's very interesting.

As it is hot enough to melt steel (item saves), a minimum of 212 Fahrenheit sounds about right

....physics fail

Physics crit fail at that.

Iron melts at 2750 degrees, Steel a little lower depending on carbon content.

In addition, being flash exposed to that temperature wouldn't melt steel, you would need considerably higher temperatures for an instantanous event (explosion) to melt steel.

You would be far better off saying potential item damage is from concussive force or flying debris as the heat angle really holds no water.

Lets also not get too deeply into what happens to an orc who is either exposed to 2750 degree heat or has a metal weapon melted in his hand.

Isn't 212 F the boiling point of water?

Yep its tied into the study of psychology and the various advancements made in that field...

Ok. Show me a list of game designers with advanced degrees in psychology. If there aren't any then show me the list of advances in the field that would have a direct effect on game design.

I'm wagering you can't do either.

Reinhart has argued effectively that game design MIGHT have the potential for change if more people with math and psych degrees go into game design, but certainly no one's shown that it's changed already.  He himself noted that it's still very rare for people in game design to hold such degrees.

And it's worth noting the Gygax himself studied anthropology, although I don't believe he completed his degree.

At the temperatures needed to melt metals (even those with low melting points) the human brain stops functioning and blood boils. Basically it becomes a DIE spell (no save).

For the record, I've had a different account for each edition of D&D so far--I keep forgetting my names and passwords.

And I also put 2e as my favorite version, though I liked different aspects of 3rd and 4e just fine.

more physics fail....

Thermodynamics, people, learn it!

Being exposed to a temperature does not mean that a thing instantly becomes that temperature.

If one were so inclined one could argue that at about half to a third of melting level temperatures a metal begins to lose strength.

However, losing strength isn't enough to damage the object unless some sort of stress/strain is placed on the object while it's heated.

I think this more or less illustrates why improv and codified rules need to be the standard, not a mix.  Why does fireball in some editions have the chance to damage items?  Because that's what the spell says it will do.  Does it make sense logically?  Certainly not in the terms of metal items given the damage guidelines laid out.  Will most DMs rule out of hand, it says it damages metal items, well that's stupid ignore that bit.  Nope.
