If you just want to be a vampire, be a Vryloka.  They're actually a pretty good race.  Pile on all the flavor you want.

There's no reason to touch Vampire(class) at all unless you're interested specifically in exploiting the mechanics of that class.

What you did is either make your Vampire a bit more powerful, or seriously gimp your Paladin.

Vryloka is probably best race for Vampire.

Another opt would be to choose Half-Orc and take the feat Thirst for Blood (another healing surge brings you from 2 to 3).

Firebugs "nitpick" killed my argument. So nevermind.


Now, to the OP, if you were to build a paladin with the vrylocka as race, it may not be the strongest choice, but certainly a viable one, and I think it would offer you the flavor you seek.

Nitpick, Surge Value drops by 2 while bloodied, not total number of surges.
