This doesn't bode well for the 4E internet tools lasting a whole lot longer, does it?
its typical wizards. every cliche is true. every seemingly wild complaint is valid. every conspiracy theory is eventually proven. they ARE as inept at marketing as they seem. they ARE as money grubbing as they appear. they really DONT care about you at all. they have ZERO loyalty to 4e players. ZERO. its all true
it all plays out like some never-ending nightmare, repeating itself, over and over, always the same no matter how many chances you give them, no matter what you do. but you love d&d so you cant stop watching, you cant turn away
soon, they will shut off the 4e tools, so if we DO get lucky and GTO happens, import EVERYTHING. they will claim there isnt enough support to keep them up...just like they did for the vt, just like they did for the compiled mags. they will blame 4e players with a straight face, then stick out a slimy palm and ask you to buy 5e, and start the whole thing over again

Not since Starcraft Ghost have my nerd fantasies gone so brutally unfulfilled.
Now you're just being cruel....why did you have to bring that up

There is a 3rd party created parser available for inputting DDI conent to a format Fantasy Grounds understands (check the post before yours to see what FG is). This way you can use and parse whatever content you own and content from DDI to use in your games in FG.
Yay, I can use a third party program to interact with another third party program to do the most useful thing (for me) that the VT did automatically, with no fuss whatsoever....
I don't mean to snark, but, the fact is that the VT was functional, and had advantages over third party products, and it sucks that it's getting ditched.
Right. It was just a suggestion, nothing more
This might seem trivial to the majority, but for me it's not fun to play RPG's if I can't roll the dice. Writin /roll or /die or clicking a button is not fun. That's why I'm using FG because it has dynamic dice you can drag and roll yourself. Also, I like to play other RPGs (such as GURPS and Savage Worlds) too and FG handles many many different systems as well. It has very great support for 3.5 and 4E too
So if you'd like to try it out, I can give you a demo session If not, then I won't bother you anymore :P
EDIT: And I'm not saying that the WotC's own tabletop wasn't good or anything - I'm just suggesting alternatives now that it's coming to an end
Fair enough. The main thing I used the VT for was connecting the Builders and having one place to click on characters and monsters and change numbers. I barely even used the map function. Not sure if I'd really get much out of it for other games, unless FG has character management stuff as well.
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.

Many have expressed fears about D&D going the way of gadgets and bytes, but WotC has just officially pulled the plug on the D&D Virtual Table.
Citing a failure to generate enough support for the tool to launch a full version to the public, access to the VT will be coming to an end effective July 30th.
Bummer, man.
I wonder what this means for D&DNext? (If anything.)
And why did it fail to generate support? Because regardless of what many people tried to get others to believe, the tool just didn't deliver anything worth the money.
Frankly, I'm more annoyed at all the official and unofficial (Guides and volunteers) that sometimes poiletly, sometimes snarkily defended the lack luster VT, siting it's LACK of features as a good thing, because it was easier to use.
I'm sorry. Please look at what my phone can do. Please look at this amazing hand held tablet that can be like a computer. Please look at all the features these things called APPS have.
If anything, people LOVE features and customization. What would ever make you think less features would be a selling point?
You failed, because you made excuses rather then a good product.

I'm stunned that people are surprised. WotC and even TSR before it, have NEVER provided anything worthwhile that was digital. Even the current Character Builder and Monster Builder are pale, sickly imitations of what a good product could be and the Compendium, whilst useful, is still nowhere near what a decent search engine should be like.
Actually TSR put out the AD&D Core Rules CD and its expansion which was an amazingly customizable set of player and DM digital tools and despite being over a decade old it monkey stomps anything WotC has done since. Oh, and it included e-books.
Owner and Proprietor of the House of Trolls. God of ownership and possession.

Yep. I bought it before 3E came out and I used it right up until I lost the CD and had to change out computers...

Have they formally announced that the character visualiser is withdrawn? I signed up for that alone and I would hate to think all my money had been wasted... :P

I found one on eBay, expansion and all. I'm still using it -- fantastic program for what I want. Not perfect, but really really good. They're still out there with some looking.
In memory of wrecan and his Unearthed Wrecana.5e should strongly stay away from "I don't like it, so you can't have it either."
