Hey all, I've been reading through the monstrous manual for 2e AD&D and was wondering how some of the damage is to be calculated? for istance the Hag has damage values of 9-16, 7-8 and 7-10, how exactly are these damage values "rolled"?
You sometimes have to figure out the range and that tells you the die type. Then whatever is left is a modifier.
True, but the distributions could vary quite a lot if a die expression is ambiguous. For example, 3-12: is this 3d4 (essentially Gaussian-distributed, more results closer to the mean value) or 1d10+2 (uniformly distributed, equal chance of getting any result in the range)?
This issue was amusing enough that, for some game groups, it became a game in its own right. During slow points in play, someone would call out a range of numbers -- "3 to 16" -- and the race was on to see who could be first to find a legitimate way to generate that range, using only real dice (no d9s or d7.5s).*
...
*2d6 + 1d4 works. How many more can you think of? Here's a harder one for advanced players -- 8-26. Think you're an expert? Find a way to get 4-66. Yes, solving these sometimes requires a bit of algebra, but if you played D&D in 1975, odds are good that you were either acing algebra (because you were a genius) or flunking it (because you were spending all your time playing D&D).
Mind you, specificity isn't the only consideration to keep in mind when designing dice expressions. Later on in 3.5's life (a year before 4e was announced), they discussed "fast dice expressions" that have a two-stage derivation (i.e. you get something like 1d6 damage per level to produce 15d6, then convert that so it's one-third dice and two-thirds constant, resulting in 5d6+35. These have exactly the same average result - 52.5 - but have totally different variances), which are much faster to evaluate because you aren't stopping to add up dozens of six-siders. Essentially this reduces cognitive load and speeds up the game quite a bit.

The numbers aren't always clear and in some cases there are a few different things that could work. If damage was listed as 3-12 what would that be? Well it could be 1d10+2 but it could also be 3d4 which fills the exact same range but has a very different distribution. It can get even worse if you were to mix die types because while 9-16 looks nice as 1d8+8 it could also be 2d3+1d4+6.
8-26 is also 6d4+2, and while I haven't worked through 4-66 recently, there's probably a 1e-style "multiply this by X if 1d6 rolls 1-2, by Y if it rolled 3-4, or by Z if it rolled 5-6" function to produce it as well. (When that article came out, I also clued in on 3d20+1d6.)
And while I also think they're fun... they're a different game than I'd like to play when I sit down at D&D. In my view (as a developer), the rules should have as tiny a cognitive load as possible, while still capturing the balance and nuance that they're supposed to handle.
