the group of plaayers i mainly play with all also have a warhammer background. so we used to play with mesured inches and minatures even in AdnD 2nd.
ok guys don't touch anything on the table, that stack of books is raised terrain, the bottel of coke is a huge tree, the opend bag of crisp is a opening to a cave.
you start here go.
And the four packs of cigs in a line is the caravan that you will be protecting.

I have a glass tabletop from an end table I love to use as a second level for 3D combat. "Alright guys, ground floor is the city streets, the glass pane on four coke cans is the level 50 feet above where the four flying poisonous jellyfish are hovering. All areas directly beneath them are covered in nerve-toxin tentacles. Drawn squares are the buildings you can enter and try to climb, but every turn you waste running more peaceful protesters are stunned and dragged off by the militia. GO!"
On a related note, anyone else ever try a New Crobuzon-themed campaign?
... congratulations, Monkeygentleman. You won the unwinnable.
| monkeygentleman, you are the worst thing to happen to the CharOp forums since Mearls took over WotC.

Are they a secret?
No, they are in plain view: breaking of immersion, not wanting the players to focus on a birds-eye-view of the encounter, or bringing in Squad Leader or Snakes and Ladders (in the case of 4th Ed ) into an encounter, and many, many other reasons, ask around, none of it's hidden.
But I still like to mix it up, have had great encounters with all the accoutrements (grids, minis, tiles, measuring tapes, 3-D terrain, jello etc).

breaking of immersion,
Never been a problem for me or my group.
not wanting the players to focus on a birds-eye-view of the encounter,
Having a clearer view of the field is bad how?
or bringing in Squad Leader or Snakes and Ladders (in the case of 4th Ed ) into an encounter,
What the hell does this even mean?

It's a (barely) obfuscated rant against "shifting" and other board-manipulation powers.

Really? You've never seen the battlemap and just knew what would be an important fight and what was not because of the existance of the battlemap? It's happened to me too many times. Espeically the one session where I didn't set any battlemap up, and the players were all .. "ooh, Skill challenge session!"

The stacks of sheets of paper with NPC/Monster stats are just as big a giveaway as the map.
Check out my blog--now REACTIVATED with DnDnext feedback!

Hmm, I never have those stacks of sheets, since I mostly use modules that other people have written.

I have a wet erase chessex battle mat that I leave out and store my minis in a tackle box. Then I tell the story and if combat happens, I then draw the map and pull the minis out. This way the players don't know there's a battle until they actually enter one...

1) Never been a problem for me or my group.
2) Having a clearer view of the field is bad how?
3) What the hell does this even mean?
1) Good for you guys, some of us don't like every encounter to bring out the chess board.
2) Nothing, but sometimes people in a real life encounter are not a bird.
3) I'll raise your slide 2, and raise you 3.
Why are you looking for an argument, I never said grids/minis etc are bad, just I don't always dig them?
Mix it up, baby, like life!
