I don't know if it was in one of the editions of DnD, but if it wasn't my GM back in the day used another's system which was kinda neat, and would be awesome if DnD had something for it in the latest editions.
What Im talking about is large scale combat like when player characters are leading small armies against other armies.
In the aforemention example, me and my party where given small detachments of armies like 50 men a piece and we defended a city from humanoid invaders, Obviously we can't indivdually roll out these numbers until the numbers dwindled, but do you think?

AD&D (and possibly 3rd Edition) had the Battle System rules for mass combat.
I think that those rules would work pretty well with the way things are shaping up for D&DNext.

Those were probably the rules, I remember. I just never knew where they came from. Now I know! And yes I think something like that would be a nice touch to D&DNext
