Rolling a 20 to hit is one of the more exciting things in DnD.
Assigning maximum damage is so lame, boring, insipid, bland, banal, dull, monotonous, colorless, humdum, dry, blah, vapid, unimaginative, lifeless, prosaic, stale, and uninteresting that it is clear that whoever wrote that rule missed the memo that DnD was supposed to be FUN.

Yeah max damage is ok, but it does need something extra. When I played 2e we used the house rule that if you got a 20 you coud roll for another attack, and you could keep going provided you rolled a 20.
I think max damage and roll again might work.

If you don't like it just hous rule something else, it's not going to break the system if you do.

In all fairness, the max damage on a 20 is probably intended to be quick.
I don't see why you cant just replace that with double damage if you like.

Crit dice are fun. Everybody likes rolling more dice. Whether it's specifically-labeled crit dice like 4e, or damage multiplication like 3e, more dice is good dice.

No. Rules should be good and promote fun. The house rule "solution" means I subjected to boredom if I play at my local gaming store, conventions, future computer games, the Wizards online gaming community, my conservative DM friend who plays by the rules, et al.

I know it's intended to be quick. Quick should not be the goal when engaged in an activity that is ostensibly fun or enjoyable. I want quick when I am doing the dishes. I don't want quick when kissing my spouse.
And I can't just replace it if I go to a gaming convention or play in an online community that is comprised of strangers who don't know each other as those formats almost always go by rules as written.

So the dealbreaker in a hypothetical 5E videogame is max damage on a crit?
What?

Do realize this is just a variant on the "I like or don't like [thing], so everyone should be forced to use the variant on [thing] that I like!" hubris that's pervaded several threads (and every alignment thread) since DDN was announced.

Qmark, I notice you ignored the organized play and conservative friends arguments.
As for crits maxing out the dice worked in 4e because most of the time you either had crit dice, or multiple weapoon dice running from a power so a crit had some oomph. Asking for more potent crits in further playtest materials/the final product is not a bad idea.
As long as the players hog it all and don't share with the monsters.

Umm, no. Not even close. If you re-read the original post, you will understand both of your statements are irrelevant to what I am saying.
