The Challenge: Come up with your Iconic 5-PC D&D Party drawing from characters in Fantasy (whether movie, book, or comic, but please stay away from religious figures: i.e. Jesus can't be in your party) and post them here.

My Iconic D&D Party
1. Cleric - Elrond Halfelven (J.R.R. Tolkien). While not technically a Cleric, Elrond is a very (reputedly) skilled healer, and probably a good guy to have on your side in a battle. Plus, I don't know if you know this, but it's HARD to find a good cleric in fantasy fiction.

2. Fighter - Conan of Cimmeria (R.E. Howard). Conan is pretty awesome. My version would be a Fighter with some Rogue multi-class feats.

3. Ranger - Katniss Everdeen (S. Collins). She's a hunter. She's an archer. She's a Ranger.

4. Rogue - Gray Mouser (F. Leiber). What can I say? Mouse is awesome.

5. Wizard - Severus Snape (J.K. Rowling). I considered Gandalf but he doesn't really do much "wizard stuff". Also considered Dumbledore, but he always seems to be "away on business" when the stuff hits the fan. Elminster and Mordenkainen were candidates, and the only reason I didn't choose one of them was because I figured someone else would. Snape gets the nod not only because he's a fairly respectable wizard, but also because he'd make an interesting companion (and by interesting I mean you'll never be sure of his alliances).


Well, that's my ideal iconic D&D party... Feel free to mix and match whatever classes you'd like to have in your own party. I just prefer two strikers (Rogue/Ranger) to two defenders (Fighter/Paladin).

OK ill play:

Fighter:  Corwin (The Chronicles of Amber) Roger Zelazny.

Claric: Rhys Malachy Thuryn (Deryni novels)

Theif: Shadowspawn (Thieves' World).

Mage: Belgarath the Sorcerer (The Belgariad ) David Eddings.

Druid: The Druid Allanon (The Sword of Shannara series)

I had to make quite an effort to draw these all from different sources while maintaining balance.  Quite a challenge.  Here goes:

Fighter - Buffy Summers (Buffy TV series, Joss Whedon)  The fighter is the classic leader, and Buffy's a perfect pick.  She's tough as nails, she knows how to lead, and she kicks some serious butt.

Ranger - Dell "Chase" Brandstone (Sword of Truth series, Terry Goodkind)  The archetypal scout.  He's deadly with dozens of weapons and he can track anything, then kill it.

Cleric - Thoros of Myr (A Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin)  Melisandre's got nothing on Thoros.  He can raise the dead and best the Hound in a fight with his flaming sword.  'Nuff said.

Rogue - Robin (DC Comics)  He's an acrobat with a huge bag (belt) of tricks.  Pretty much the ultimate combat-ready burglar, so we're all glad he's a good guy.

Wizard - Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling)  She's got the no-nonsense attitude you look for in a wizard, along with all the no-cost utility magic you get from the Harry Potter-verse.  She can polymorph, perform basic healing, and out-duel Snape.  Plus, this list needs more ladies.

Cleric - Nynaeve al'Meara (Wheel of Time series, Robert Jordan)  I couldn't find a pun pun, so I went with a CoDzilla.  In addition to her powerful magics, her serious personality is a perfect foil to the lightheated personalities of the rest of the  party.

Wizard - Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander (Sword of Truth series, Terry Goodkind)  Besides spellcasting chops as good as anyone, Zed has global connections, powerful friends, and amazing resources.

Thief - Walter Slovotsky (Guardian of the Flame series, Joel Rosenberg)  Walter makes up for being unable to improve his roguish skills by already being one of the best.

Monk - Anasûrimbor Kellhus (Prince of Nothing series, Scott Bakker)  Zed and Walter might be superb at thinking outside the box, but Kellhus doesn't even consider the box as a starting point.

Fighter - Carrot Ironfounderson (Discworld series, Terry Pratchett)  The rock of the party.  Even-tempered and charismatic, he has the leadership to pull all these strong personalities into a team.  

Plus I wanted to use someone from Discworld, and it was easier to replace Sparhawk than make a case for the ultimate Vancian mage, Rincewind 

Those are all some really good choices! I hope more people play along.

Interesting to note, Cyan is totally Paladin (Cavalier) with a Samurai theme.

Also, I find that Terra, for all her magic, is more a hybrid fighter/sorcerer, while Stragos hits me more a the wizard.

With Realm as the "what the hell" kind of character that doesn't really fit into anything, Setzer doesn't really fit into any specific class either, Mog is a Dancer which usually goes with Bard (:uh-huh, Umaro is kind of a Berserker/Barbarian if that barb just likes to charge things, and Gogo?  Don't get me started on that freak.  He's a Hybrid everything, and breaks all the rules, as does wild boy Gau.

Yeah, I left out Gau and Relm and the rest because they are quite...unique and not really easy to define in any way other than the context in which they are presented.  Gau, I suppose, could be some sort of Druid if you flavored his wild shape ability appropriately.

If I was just going to choose my ultimate party, and nix the Iconic part, it might look something like:

Tavi (Dresden) as a Swordmage-esque fighter/defender.
Pug (Feist) as my Wizard who can literally bend worlds. Also Garth One-Eye from a series of books based on M:TG would also be pretty cool.
Aravan (McKiernan) as my Ranger/Rogue type. Probably a Polearm build of some sort.
Nine Fingers (Abercrombie) as my Fighter/Barb.
I might also skip the cleric and take Tom Bombadil as my Shaman!

*Names in paranthesis are the authors of the series which contain those characters.

Rand Al Thor or Gandalf could easily be swapped in if needed.
