I regret only that the bulk of this probably won't be together in time for me to base a character on it for the next game I'm playing in (which starts thisafternoon).
While I'm not always a fan of the guide writer's ... curmugeonly persona, I have great respect for Erachima's high system mastery. I've always loved this class and lamented its poor performance - if any guide will provide a way to make this class work, it's this one. So, awesome. I can't wait to read more.
This will be perfect for my new player who's fascinated by the flavor of assassins but doesn't quite get the mechanics. I've always avoided the class as overly complicated and underpowered, so seeing it with fresh eyes should help me help him. And I second the sentiment that erachima, while not always subtle or patient, is a fountain of useful information and high system mastery. I quite look forward to seeing this guide fully fleshed out.
I look forward to reading this handbook Erachima, thanks for your efforts
Seeing as I agree with everything in the quoted posts (although I've enjoyed talking with Erachima the few times I logged into the Charop channel) I'll just go +1.
Seriously, the Executioner's been the only thing that's gotten me to play an 'assassin' in 4th, this may help me overcome that block.
Although I didn't like the Assassin becoming a limited arcane caster in 3.0 and the shadow source stuff just got my head spinning in 4th.
Thanks anyway Erachima.

Frankly, I like the fact that erachima states flat-out that the Assassin isn't great, but that the handbook will focus on making the Assassin as good as it can be. Just because a class isn't the best there is at what it does, that doesn't mean it should be completely ignored. I'll definitely be paying attention to this handbook.

I believe what erachima is going for, is dissimilar from the Vampire guide. It's not, "this sucks, but here's how to make it ok". It is more along the lines of "this sucks, but with certain rules interactions you can be really good, its just questionable if the DM is gonna ok it"

I'm interested to see what happens with this. I'm not really a fan of the class, but I've been searching *desperately* on a "one shot, one kill"-type character to field in an upcoming game.

One Shot, One Kill?
Rogue with Knockout, followed up by Every Trick in the Book, is my recommendation, with Graceful weapons. You are welcome!

Wait, seriously? Did Black Fire just become the definitive power every dex-based striker wants to poach?

Shadow Fire? It's certainly good, yes, though I believe Tumbling Strike is about equal to it.
It's particularly good for the Rogue, since they'll get to do... uh, 4x SA on it, assuming they joined the class by the Shroud feat.

I'm not quite following. Is it legal to apply Sneak Attack to all 4 damage instances from a single attack and still have it be considered one use? That was never a topic of discussion to powers of such caliber in the past, such as Every Trick in the Book.

On review, yes, it turns out that won't work due to the essentials wording update. The original wording worked but the new one stops it. ("Once per round, when you have combat advantage against an enemy and are using a weapon from the light blade, the crossbow, or the sling weapon group, an attack you make against that enemy deals extra damage if the attack hits." vs. "When you make an attack with a light blade, a hand crossbow, a shortbow, or a sling and hit an enemy granting combat advantage to you, that enemy takes extra damage based on your level. You can deal this extra damage only once per turn.") Unless you use specific game elements to work around the restriction, of course. Dread Fang's Dread Sneak Action, for instance, doesn't limit it to applying only a single additional time.
