My biggest question is whether Next will be based on d20 system like the 3rd Edition and the 4th Edition, or not. What do you think?

There's no chance at all that they're going to abandon the d20 as the primary method of task resolution.
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

I agree with Salla, They are talking about trying to keep this edition Iconic dnd and I can't think of anything more representative of dnd than the d20

What was AD&D and BECMI based on? I remember rolling d20 for attacks, saving throws, and ability checks there too. It just didn't have a brand name at the time.

No. 5E will be the D20 System.

There's a big difference between "d20 System" which refers to the OGL-spawned third-party gaming system, and using a d20 as the basis for a system. 5e will be the latter, not the former.
D&D Next = D&D: Quantum Edition

Well.. there's a difference between the d20 System and an rpg system that uses d20s.

That's what I thought too, except the OP referenced 4e as being part of the d20 system, which it isn't if "d20 system" is referring to the OGL.

In 1e & 2e a d20 was rolled, but you might want to roll over a target number or under a target number or roll and add to the d20 result.
3e onwards standardized this to roll-a-d20-add-a-modifier-and-compare-to-another-number.
It is this 2nd mechanic that we are likely to see.
From what the Dev's have said:
1. Compare attribute to difficulty. If the attribute is high enough you pass without a roll. 2. If in combat or would fail step 1 roll a d20 and add a modifier... 2a. ... and compare it to a static difficulty (a roll to hit AC). 2b. ... and your opponent does the same and the highest roll wins (saving throws).
In fact so far this is the only solid-ish mechanic that anybody knows about outside of the NDAs.

Actually there was also a difference between the d20 system and the OGL. Using the d20 system license was more restrictive than the OGL.
