I understand the idea of playing an Avenger or a Blackguard with a deity such as Tempest and such. How should one play such a character when their deity represents love, crafting, or agriculture? Is an Avenger or Blackguard of Oghma supposed to smite down the ignorant masses?

Um depends on the Deity that you follow. I have an avenger of Ioun, I destroy anything of Vecna's and search for knowledge and perfection of skill. I know my fate is what it will be and am not afraid of death.
A avenger with a deity in agriculture may not enjoy cities and look more for helping the needy in remote areas. Love, thats pretty easy as well. You protect any of the civilized races against those who want to destroy everything out of spite. Crafting could be a PC that is looking for the perfect armor or weapon. They could be in the adventure to find lost art or artifacts.
With talking to who ever is your DM you can come up with beliefs and ideas that your character follows.

You roleplay them *however you think is best to roleplay them*. There is no 'supposed to'.

+1 to Avenger of Ioun (both mechanically with power of skill and fluff-wise since it makes me think of the the BoS from fallout, only they share their knowledge).
Pretty much I would say Don't have them murder-death-kill everyone who isn't for their way of life, but those who go out of their way to be against them (thus followers of Vecna and people who hoard and hide information are the enemies of my Ioun Avenger).

I remember making an Avenger of Sharess, simply to justify using a bikini-and-spear Reaper mini I had on hand: (note not my paint job, this is far better)

Let me explain my reason for bringing this up. An idea has come up in my group on having an entire group dedicated to a single deity where the players each play a divine character class. Diving classes that have been selected are as follows: Avenger, Blackguard, Cleric, Invoker, Paladin Game will be set in Forgotten Realms Not every Deity has a blatant foe. Particularly in the Forgotten Realms which is where the campaign is set. Discussions have come up to which deity should be selected. After some reading there are questions on what exactly certain classes purposes for that deity will be depending on the deity. Clerics, Paladins and Invokers are pretty black and white in design or roleplaying their deities. Paladin is a protector of its deity’s purpose. Invoker is the voice of the deity purpose. Cleric is a reflection of their chosen deity in mortal form. Avengers and Blackguards I find to be a bit trickier by design. An Avenger smites of the deity’s foes. Blackguard also seems like something between an Avenger and a Paladin by concept. An Avenger or Blackguard of Corellon is not too hard, enemy of Gruumush enforce of tradition. An Avenger or Blackguard of Sune (Lady of Love) is a bit harder to pin down. Who exactly are Sune’s foes? My fellow players and I believe that if you choose a Divine Character class its more than just a power source that should be roleplayed. Problem is that specific deities are easier to interpret than others depending on the classes.

Forgotten Realms version of Ioun is Oghma. We have been discussing him as a possibility.
Once again the discussion is how will each character follow the edicts.

Blackguards are kind of the oddman out in that group. The usually follow evil dieties and are defined by their vice that they give into. I don't really see that gelling with any of the good gods at all let alone most of the unaligned gods as well.
Looking at the other four, I'd suggest thinking of it as more of an organizations than a direct reflection. Invokers are like Prophets wandering out of the desert to speak the word of the God. Paladin's match the knight errant in apperance and you can essentially model them on the knights hospialler who defended pilgrims and set up hospitals and waystations along the pilgramage routes. Clerics try to act out the tenants of their faith and service those in need. Avengers would be like the Templars who sought through offensive operations taking the fight to the enemy.

A better way to look at it. An Avenger is the *warrior* of a Diety - Paladins are about smiting. But they DEFEND the faith. the Avenger is the offense to the Paladin's defense. Sune has her Warriors of Love (probly dressed in leotards and miniskirts with frills of justice).
Sune's Avengers would oppose hatred in any form: Cyric and Bane come immediately to mind, along with Lloth. But on a lower scale: petty jealousy, anger, and a tendency to violent solutions (Hey, Tempus!) would also be opposed, Hoar/Assuran, as god of vengance.
Sharess would be similar, being a goddess of pleasure, hedonism, freedom, and cats. She would oppose most of those Sune would, and slavers of all kinds, be impulsive and always looking for new and exciting pleasures (someone who never sleeps alone at an inn is obvious, but insane curiousity works just as well). Loviatar obviously, but Illmater is just as confusing. Talona and Lloth also are obvious opponents.

You are correct Blackguards follow evil deties but don't always do so. As for the Vice I've found there could be some vices in regards to Oghma and Sune by design.
Thank you for the advice I will bring it up with the other players.
