Locked: Dungeons and Dragons link to crime and loss of touch with reality?

There have been controveries that Dungeons and Dragons can cause players to loose touch with reality and increase their tendency toward crime. The evidence to support this claim is very flimsy often citing the few cases of players who went crazy, murdered, or were suicidal. Out of the millions who have probably played the game, I find this a ridiculous argument. More people who play football probably could be found in those same categories then D&D.

The only times I would see Dungeons and Dragons being a problem is if players played the game 10+ hours a day 7 days a week all year round, if they mixed the game with psychodelic drugs that cause them to lose touch with reality, or if they had a previous mental condition that caused them to lose touch with reality such as schizophrenia.

Playing a fantasy game that helps players escape reality for a small period of time is harmless in itself, but if you mix that in with psychodelic drugs that cause the drug user to become delusional and lose track of what is real / not real then that could be a dangerous combo. I think mind altering drugs should not be mixed with D&D.

Also I think if a player already has a mental condition such as schizophrenia which causes him to lose touch with reality I don't think playing a fantasy role-playing game would be a wise decision. Although studies have shown that role-playing positive peer-interactions can benefit patients suffering from schizophrenia, role-playing negative peer-interactions such as steeling or backstabbing would only confuse a schizophrenic on what appropriate peer-interactions are.

Studies have shown that continous daily role-playing may confuse the player and cause them to start to loose touch with reality. However, since D&D is hard enough to get a group to play together once a month , even harder once a week, I think this would not be an issue at all. The only real danger I could see with D&D is if it were played 10+ hours a day every day, 7 days a week, all year long. Even then I think the chances of losing touch with reality would be slim to non-existent since many RPG computer games play for such long periods and never lose touch with what is real and what is not.

Have you ever taken psychodelics?  Thats not really how they work.  If you are going to talk about studies of role-players losing touch with reality, please cite your sources.

Wait, people still seriously claim that D&D causes "loss of touch with reality and increased criminal tendencies?" I... I don't know how to respond to that.

So the other day I was robbing a bank.  It was pretty easy considering my level.  Sleep spell on the guards.  Charm person on the bank teller.  Top it off with a Gate spell to summon a Balor to carry the money.  Ahhh yes...  now back to memorizing my spells.
