Usually you apply a Strength bonus for To Hit in melee and a Dexterity bonus for To Hit in Ranged Attacks.
In 3.5 you could flip this with Weapon Finesse.
How about:
- During character generation you can choose (based on the options your class gives you?) your main attribute for the To Hit bonus?
- With a feat you could swap your "main To Hit bonus attribute" with another (not only Dex like in Weapon Finesse)?
? :-)

I don't like it. It should be either STR or DEX. I would agree if you said it should be STR for one-handed and heavier weapons and DEX for light weapons rapiers for standart. But I don't see any sense in CON or WIS for "to hit" attribue. =)

i would say int, dex, str or in some cases cha would be appropriate stats for using to hit (dependant on class maybe). The other's not so - wis and con are more passive than active.

I see little sense in hitting with char too, but I like the idea. Either set as defoult strenght for two handed wapons and some one handed, and dextrity for others, or to give intelligence in some occasion, or the possibility to pick the one you prefer. All of this could be nice.

I've suggested this before. I believe it could be cool if everyone had to choose at character creation a stat for physical combat and a stat for magical combat. There's lot of possible descriptions for each of these, and you should just go ahead and choose the one that fits your character best. Want an agile dueler that studied shadow magic? Dex/Int. Want a charming swashbuckler whose technique is unparalleled? Int/Cha. It's an awesome system in my opinion. You can also have default modifiers for each class for those who don't like that kind of freedom (for instance, the Fighter has Str / Con as default; the Wizard has Dex / Int).

Con for physical attack is the defacto attack stat of the "mighty glacier" archetype. he bides his time, taking your mosquito bite hits then simply walks into an opening and flatlines you.

This is very 4.5 sounding. I thought 4e's class based primary stat was really awkward. Had nothing to do with the core game and was just a Power mechanic.
I found when the game allows PCs to move away from the core mechanics, unbalance occurs.

Yeah, I always found class-based primary stats awkward too. It inhibits retexturing the ability scores. I'd like it better if they got away from linking class and ability scores altogether and left ability scores as part of the skill system.

Actually, it's quite simple once you get the hang of it. Now, if you really want wacko, check out a golf scoring card!
