I just checked out the listing on Amazon for Halls of Undermountain and was pleasantly surprised to see it was a hardcover but extremely disappointed to see it was only 96 pages long. By comparison, both of the previously released "super-adventures" Tomb of Horrors and Revenge of the Giants were 160 pages long.

While I'm disappointed about the short page count, what really irks me is that its going to cost the same as those other two books. I know there's going to be a second poster map (the other two adventures only had one) but for me that doesn't make up for the reduced page count.

I was very surprised at how good the 4e Book of Vile Darkness was, but similarly disappointed at how slim it was but yet cost the same as a 160 page book.

Perhaps I should just be happy that we're getting any more 4e material at all, but it bothers me that we are getting less product for our money.

The current edition is BECMI, the most popular form of Basic D&D and the adventure is the classic Red Box quest to kill Bargle the evil magic user. Check it out, learn about the games roots, and enjoy the story as it unfolds.

Maybe less pictures, tables and stats. Making it close to a content less edition neutral book.

I was even more disapointed for having seen an earlier product summary:

One 64-page adventure book
One 32-page campaign book
2 card stock sheets of hero and monster tokens
1 card stock sheet of dungeon tiles
2 double-sided battle maps
6 pre-painted plastic miniatures representing boss monsters (1 Large, 4 Medium, and 1 Small)
8 treasure cards

and later for seeing that is a lv 1-5 adventure Frown

Actually this makes me rather upbeat for the product. This makes it sound more like Gardmore Abbey which was a fantastic product. I'd rather spend $35 on all the stuff in this list than on a single 96 page hardcover.

Levels 1-5 is about what I'd expect considering that this is going to be an old school dungeon crawl. That doesn't lend itself to high level play. What's really disappointing is that we're not getting this AND proper paragon and epic adventures.

im pretty confident it will be a good product, much like gardmore. i am saddened though that wizards made it a level 1; this was an opportunity to continue the loose adventure path started with the red box, dm kit, monster vault, and ending w gardmore. so making it like 8-12 level would have been really cool. i might not buy it right when it comes out bc i dont have any group at level 1-5 and the last two campaigns i have dmed i have started the groups higher than that. maybe ill wait a year and pick it up for less than half the cover price on amazon.

anyways, wizards really sucked when it came to high level support for 4e

You misunderstood me: i would also have prefered to pay extra for that package (i also loved Gardmore Abbey) and was excited for it; you can imagine my disapointment when the summary was changed Frown

Todays Design & Development column confirms the early summary above.

Waiting for next instalment, which will go into the reasons behind the change; too bad, the original content had me (and another DM) drooling...

I am however curious about the three adventures within, probably the same approach of Madness at Gardmore Abbey with the quests, which work quite well.

I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed in this release. The book is good, the art is great but it's too short for $30.00. I'm feeling kinda ripped off here. This could have been such an awesome release the way it was originally planned- I would have happily paid more for it to include minis, tokens and tiles.

Im glad a release for 4th has hit the shelves- it has been a few months now since Heroes of Elemental Chaos came out. But, this product seems like an afterthought- an afterthought once D&D Next was announced.
