I just finished running a few D&D encounters using the Red Box for my two sons who are 8 and 5. It feels like D&D has finally come full circle for me. I played my first game 30 years ago from the Purple Box and I've never been the same since. I just hope this game means as much to them as it has to me.
I gotta go. My oldest is asking to play again as I type this (no kidding)!

Very cool.
I've been DMing my two sons for about 7 years through 3.5 to 4e and now on to Pathfinder. They really enjoy the game. My daughter also plays sometimes as a hired hand for my boys or at times on her own custom solo adventure with her companion cat.

We used pregens downloaded from the D&D website. My youngest chose Fargrim the Dwarven fighter and my oldest chose Jarren the human wizard.
A companion cat, Phobos? Yes, that might be enough to get my daughter interested as well!

It is always good to bring in new blood. As they say, the family that plays together stays together!
My kids (daugher 9 and son 6) have been playing for about a year. My daughter plays an eladrin swordmage and my son plays a thri-kreen ranger (scout). They love it!
Here are the PHB essentia, in my opinion: - Three Basic Rules (p 11)
- Power Types and Usage (p 54)
- Skills (p178-179)
- Feats (p 192)
- Rest and Recovery (p 263)
- All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)
A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

As you might expect her adventures consist of living in a small village that is sometimes attacked by goblins with "dogs". She even did a little exploration to a few nearby caves and spiders. The town looks to her as a hero. Normally were dealing with a lot of 2 hit minions and a single boss.
Her cat is (I used the monster builder) basically an iron defender at her same level and renamed as a cat. Its intelligent and speaks to her, but no one else hears it.

My dad first got me into RPGs with the old HeroQuest game, and later the Warhammer Quest game. Such fun times!
