XDMC 35: Create a Template!

Welcome to the thirty-fifth Expert Dungeon Master Competition! The primary purpose of the Expert Dungeon Master Competitions is threefold:
  • To create a resource for new Dungeon Masters drawing on the vast talent pool of the experienced Dungeon Masters of this forum.
  • To create a fun and vibrant competition that is sportsmanlike and friendly.
  • To showcase the creativity and talent of Dungeon Masters like you.

The best way to keep informed about the competition is to join the Expert Dungeon Master Competition group. There you can review the rules, archives, and future contest ideas, and get broadcasts telling you when new competitions begin and when results are released!

The topic for this competition is Template. As the Dungeon Master's Guide describes, a template is a "recipe for changing a monster". Templates can be used to make monsters fit a theme, to make them deadlier, or simply to surprise players by giving monsters unexpected abilities. More information on templates, as well as sample templates, can be found in these articles about the Dungeon Master's Guide, Dungeon Master's Guide 2, and Open Grave. For this competition, you are asked to produce a fun and challenging template that a Dungeon Master might incorporate into a campaign.

Required Elements

In order to enter this competition, your entry must fulfill the following required elements:
  • Name. Name the template.
  • Mechanics. Include all mechanics necessary for applying this template to a creature, such as prerequisite, role, keywords, etc.
  • Flavor. Include some flavor for the template, describing what this template accomplishes and why it might be incorporated into a campaign.

If you fail to include a required element, you will receive a score of zero in Themes.

Optional Elements

Each entry must include three of the following optional elements:
  1. Awesomely Cursed: The template is considered a curse even though it makes the creature more powerful.
  2. Bloody: The template grants additional powers while the creature is bloodied.
  3. Construct: The template grants the creature the Construct or Living Construct subtype.
  4. Domesticated: The template makes an ordinarily hostile creature into a animal companion, companion, familiar, and/or mount.
  5. Elect: The template describes the servant of one or more of the most powerful class of extra-planar beings (i.e., Archfey, Archdevil, Demon Lord, Far Realm Entity, Deity, Lady of Pain, or Primordial).
  6. Infectious: The template can be passed from one creature to another, such as classic lycanthropy.
  7. Luller: The template makes the creature appear weaker than the untemplated version of the creature.
  8. Minion Leader: The template grants the creature the leader sub-role because of powers that aid Minions.
  9. Nimbused: The template grants the creature an aura.
  10. Primal: One or more of the template's benefits have the Primal keyword.
  11. Retributive: The templates causes the creature to attack when it is hit, at least once during an encounter.
  12. Teamwork: The template is designed such that two or more templated creatures work together.
  13. Unique: Only one creature with this template can exist at any one time.
  14. Vulnerable: The template grants the creature a vulnerability to an energy type other than fire or radiant.

It is recommended that you list the optional elements included in your entry.  Otherwise, the judges will score you only on those elements they happen to notice.

General Rules

Following are some general rules of the Expert DM Competition. The complete list of rules is in the Expert Dungeon Master Competition Group Wiki.
  • Code of Conduct. All entries must comply with the forum's Code of Conduct.
  • Contest Duration. Contests usually run for two weeks, beginning with the post announcing the competition. The Coordinator may extend the duration of the contest at his discretion after consulting the other judges for that competition. However, such extensions should be done very rarely.
  • Edits Made at Entrants' Own Risk. A judge may download your entry any time after it is submitted. So any edits you make might not be considered by a judge. For this reason, you should submit your entry in as complete a form as possible. Use the preview function liberally. Once winners have been announced, entrants may edit their entries.
  • Multiple Entries Prohibited. Each applicant may only submit one entry during the period in which entries may be submitted. Submitting multiple entries disqualifies all entries. Additional entries may be submitted after the competition closes, but they will not be judged.
  • Multi-Post Entries Prohibited. Each entry must be contained within a single post. The judges must ignore any subsequent posts.
  • Outside Materials Prohibited. Your entry may not include material hosted on a website other than wizards.com and community.wizards.com. Images from your profile gallery may be used. The judges must ignore material hosted on other websites.
  • Plagiarism and Peer Reviewing Prohibited. All entries must be the original, exclusive work of the applicant. Entries found to be copying the work of another, or that have been posted for review prior to the close of the competition, will be disqualified.

Judges and Schedule

The contest will run from today through Friday, March 23, 2012. All entries must be submitted no later than 12:00 midnight at the end of that day (Eastern Standard Time). The judges of this contest are Exultation, Nyarlathotep, and SpacyRicochet, and and the coordinator of this contest is wrecan. Good luck and have fun!!

Questions and Answers

(questions posed by potential entrants and the coordinator's response)

Q. For purposes of the "Luller" optional element, what does it mean for a templated creature to appear weaker?

A. The templated creature must appear weaker, to a character untrained in the relevant Skill, than the same creature would appear without the template.

Q. Since NPC powers generally don't get power source keywods, how should the "Primal" optional element, be satisfied?

A. The template should grant the creature one or more powers that draw upon the Primal power source.  Use the Primal keyword to indicate which powers those are.  Your Themes score will be measured, in part, on how well these powers evoke the Primal power source.

I'll be watcfhing this one, but not participating. I suck at making templates of any sort.
Here are the PHB essentia, in my opinion:
  • Three Basic Rules (p 11)
  • Power Types and Usage (p 54)
  • Skills (p178-179)
  • Feats (p 192)
  • Rest and Recovery (p 263)
  • All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)

A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

Interesting... I may have a chance to enter this, since my finals end before the end of this contest. At any rate, some questions:

1.) What is exactly meant by "appear weaker" for optional element #7?

2.) What does the "Primal" keyword entail for optional element #10? As far as I know, 4E monsters don't use PC power source keywords like "Martial" or "Arcane."

The templated creature must appear, to the untrained eye, to be weaker than the same creature without the template.

The creature is granted powers that use the primal power source.  Use the primal keyword to indicate which powers those are.

Overseer

The Overseer commands swarms of Minions, using its powers to whip its underlings into a frenzy. A ruthless taskmaster, it may also leech strength from its Minions to bolster its own power. Wherever minions are found, an Overseer may lead them - whether as a summoner commanding hordes of undead, or as the leader of a Goblin warband.

"Overseer" is a template that can be added to any intelligent creature within reason. The template may be more effective when added to creatures that already have the Leader subtype.

Prerequisite: Intelligence 10

Overseer     -     Elite Brute (Leader), Elite Controller (Leader), or Elite Soldier (Leader)   -   XP Elite

Defenses
+2 All

Saving Throws +2
Action Point 1
Hit Points +10 per level + Constitution score (brute) or +8 per level + Constitution score (controller or soldier)

POWERS

Bolstering Aura - aura 5
Minions within the aura gain a +2 power bonus to damage.

Battle Orders (minor, at will, once per turn)
A Minion within Bolstering Aura either moves a number of spaces equal to the Overseer's speed, or makes a basic attack.

Life Trade (minor, at will, once per turn) - Healing
Revive up to 4 Minions within Bolstering Aura. The Overseer takes damage equal to its level.

Sacrifice (immediate reaction, when struck by an attack; recharge 456, usable when Bloodied)
Kill up to 4 Minions within Bolstering Aura. Overseer gains a +1 power bonus to defenses against the triggering attack for each Minion killed in this way.

Notes

The Overseer template can be used whenever you want to pit the party against a "goonswarm" style of encounter. Either pair a single Elite Overseer with a massive swarm of Minions, or double up templates for a BBEG whose henchmen aid him in battle (note the synergy between the Overseer and Death Knight templates, for example).

Some important things to consider:

-The number of player turns between the Overseer's turn and its Minions' can have a dramatic impact on the difficulty of the encounter. If you want a really crazy fight, consider having the Minions delay their initiative to act immediately after the Overseer.

-A well-optimized party may tear a single Elite creature down too quickly for an Elite Overseer to pose a challenge. Against a party of munchkins, consider going with a Solo.

-Don't remove killed minions from the map, as the Overseer can revive them. You can use flat markers (such as pennies) to keep track of corpses without cluttering the battlefield.

-More experienced DMs may be better able to run an Overseer encounter smoothly. In particular, you need to get through the Minions' turn quickly in order for the encounter not to drag. Knowing your PCs' defenses can help speed your turn up - just make sure not to forget if they have buffs to their AC.

-The challenge posed by a fight with an Overseer can have more to do with the abilities of the Minions than with those of the base creature to which the template is applied. Get creative, but use your best judgment.

Sample Encounters

Level 10; 2200xp
Difficulty: Normal
-2 Succubus Overseers - lvl 9 Elite Controller (Leader) - MM67
-8 Human Lackeys - lvl 7 Minion - MM162

Each Succubus can prevent a PC from attacking her, while the Lackeys benefit from a defense bonus as long as they're massed up.

Level 14; 5000xp
Difficulty: Hard
-1 Mummy Lord (Human Cleric) Overseer - lvl 13 Solo Controller (Leader) - MM192
-4 Cyclops Guards - lvl 14 Minion - MM46

Large-sized Minions! The Mummy grants allies in its aura a bonus to defenses, while the Minions get to strike when an attack misses them. The Mummy also gets to recover instantly from negative effects, which is nice for a solo. Even against a tougher party, this could be a nasty encounter.

Level 18; 9000xp
Difficulty: Very Hard
-1 Slaughter Wight Overseer - Lvl 18 Elite Brute (Leader) - MM263
-10 Abyssal Ghoul Hungerers - Lvl 18 Minion - MM119

The Ghouls explode on death, dealing automatic damage to nearby PCs. The Wight can revive them to do it again next turn, and can recover the HP spent in so doing while stealing Healing Surges. When the Wight dies, every Minion in his aura gets a free basic attack. Brutal!

Optional Elements

Bloody: The "Sacrifice" power becomes available once the Overseer is bloodied, allowing it to stretch out its own survival at the cost of its Minions.

Minion Leader: 'Nuff said.

Nimbused: "Bolstering Aura" buffs the Overseer's Minions, and all of the Overseer's powers act on Minions within the aura.

"The real hero is always a hero by mistake; he dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else."
-Umberto Eco, from Travels in Hyperreality

"The first adventurer was a nuisance.  I am sure he acted against his mother's, his wife's, and the council of old men's strict orders when he did it; but it was he that found where the mammoths die and where after a thousand years of use there was still enough ivory to equip the entire tribe with weapons.  Such is the ultimate outline of the adventurer; society's benefactor as well as pest."
-William Bolitho, from Twelve Against the Gods

Ooh... a template... I wanna win this one :D

One question: Having the template based on unoriginal flavor would cost me points? I want to have mine based on a Magic the Gathering kind of creature (one pretty old, by the way), but I don't want it to cost me the gold medal
