How strong are the arguments on this one way or the other? Is there any precident set by something else or random custserv answer lying around? The reason I ask is for interaction with the 1 free action attack/turn rule.

A free action is an actual action type. It would need to actually say "free action" for it to be one (just like it would have to say "minor" or "standard" or whatever if it was one of those action types).
Since Rending does not specify an action type, that means the effect just happens, without requiring any action at all. Which is sometimes referred to as "a No Action," but this is extremely misleading because it makes it sound like it's an action type. It isn't. It literally means it does not require any action whatsoever.
There's as strong an argument for it being a free action as there is for it being a minor, move, standard, or immediate action - i.e. there is zero basis for this in RAW.
It really should be a free action, because the current wording can get a bit broken. But it isn't.
I am okay with you saying my argument is stupid, or commits the munchkin fallacy, or any other bad thing you want. Particularly if you give a reason/explanation for it.
However, I will ignore any post that calls me stupid, or a munchkin, or what have you. Not because it bothers me; I've just found that people only start name-calling when that's the best argument they have left.

CustServ is laughable and not a reference for anything.
RAW there is no credible argument for it being anything but a No Action, as you need to make things up for that to the case. So the argument is actual rules vs null. Actual rules win.

I agree a Rending Weapon's granted attack use no action but should really use a Free action and it has been submitted to the Rule Update team, along with Reaper's Axe and Harmony Blade.
