Back when I first joined I'd see all these people post awesome things. RavingDorks 1001 Traps comes to mind, and they had decent post counts - and I wouldn't post when I had nothing to contribute.

Then after I returned to the boards and gazed directly at OTT I realized that a high post count didn't mean a poster has been helping anyone or anything at all. I was disappointed a little, even though I was foolish to think people on the internet were generally helpful.

We are helping people.  Most notably ourselves.  We're helping ourselves find amusement in the vast wastelands of the internet.  And we do a damned fine job of it, too.

Oh, and I think I may have written 1k helpful posts or so.  Hell, just yesterday I championed an unpopular cause and took all sorts of abuse (enough to get the thread closed).  Me and one other member.  So, I occasionally post 'good' things.  Yeah.  Howboutthemapples?

It really depends on the poster. Once you get a feel for a poster's style, you can guesstimate what percentage of that poster's posts are actually useful to the community content, and what percentage is goofing off or being a pointless jerkwad.

I tend to only say something when I feel I have something useful to contribute or something amusing. As I do not consider myself particularly funny (clever, yes; funny, no) I think that most of my posts are pointful. Of course, there have been several times that I've allowed myself to get drawn into debates and spent five to ten posts trying to hammer an idea into someone's thick-ass skull, or something expressed in a thread just strikes me as so redonkulously stupid, wrong, or inaccurate that I feel the need to jump on it and tear it apart. And once I'm "engaged" good luck getting me to stand down. ... Of course, since I know I can come across as a painfully pompous ass, when I've found that I'm demonstrably wrong I will generally acknowledge it. The easiest way to ruin your integrity is to fight on when you are obviously wrong.

I've seen people who have accumulated significantly higher post counts than I have in far less time. Most of the ones I've seen that have done this were rules gurus in the Magic: the Gathering section of the forums.

Exactly.
@ Easy e...
For example, it is clear that my percentage of contribution is around 98%, as anyone here can attest. Almost everything I say is for the use of edifying or educating the reader. My worth to the Community is priceless because I contribute heavily and without fail... just ask anybody. They'll tell you the same thing I'm sure.

Also, what gave you the idea that post count has anything at all to do with contribution or helping anyone? Also, who decides what is "contributing" or "helping"?

Flag EscherEnigma March 1, 2012 9:39 PM PST
Have you ever actually tried running Quantum and Newtonian at the same time?  Ugh.  What a newb. You either have to strip the Newtonian down so much that it's not worth the trouble or the play at a level where the Quantum is a huge pile of work for no discernable benefit over Newtonian.  Waste of time.  The compatibility of the systems is only on paper, never in practice.

I quit being a helpful member years ago when I realized that people are irreperably stupid, it's best to just kick back, and laugh at it all. Well people and wotc are anyway. For more recent proof just ask ZB how that thread he was in recently went. It very much proved that general discussion earned the nick name I gave it 3 years ago. Genital Discussion. Cause it has all the maturity and thoughtfulness in it, that shut in nerds have while discussing genitals.

Cause it has all the maturity and thoughtfulness in it, that shut in nerds have while discussing genitals.

But the moderation is worthy to bitch about, the group is not.
The group is one of the best things that has happened around here for a long time, and I dare say it may have kept some people here for longer than they normally might have been. It is a private group, not a public one.
So if all you aree going to do about it is bitch and complain about it and the posters therein, why don't you just leave it?

Are you one of the three wise douches? Cool

Flag Mad_Jack March 2, 2012 7:53 PM PST

I'd say about three quarters of my post count is actually helpful posting in the Rules Q & A or CharDev forums - I've been posting regularly in the What Do You Think My Character Looks Like? thread in CharDev for three years now, for example, and the rest (snark, one-liners and flogging my amazing photoshop skills, i.e., the pic above) is solely meant to be entertaining (at least to myself)...
If I bothered to get involved in any of the discussions here or in the group, I'd probably have at least twice the post count I do now.

After giving myself a hard and honest evaluation, I would have to say that roughly 110% of my posts have been helpful (+/- 10%).

Well I like to err on the side of caution/humility, but my 10% margin of error does allow for a value of 120%.

Speaking of meat, I went to this Brazilian style place on Sat.  We had like 18 people there.  They serve 14 kinds of meat.  I had like 11 of 'em and seconds of a few.  Oh, and I ate 4 chicken hearts -which are pretty damned good, actually.  So yeah, meat.  And a $1200 bill.

Was it a Texas De Brazil? I know they have locations in Ohio. They seem to be spreading out. We've had one down here for quite some time. They have pretty good stuff.

Flag Zombie_Babies March 5, 2012 8:15 AM PST
It was actually Brasa.  And it was really, really good.  It's only $40 a dinner, too.  Drinks, sushi and dessert extra.  Totally worth the price - if you don't load up on buffet items and the early served meats.
Flag homicidal_squirrel March 5, 2012 8:30 AM PST
Aside from the sushi, it looks like a Texas De Brazil. I think the price is bout the same. Do they walk around with the different meat skewers at Brasa? The good thing about Texas De Brazil is that you can request what meat you want.
Flag Zombie_Babies March 5, 2012 11:49 AM PST
Yeah, they bring 14 different kinds of meat over on skewers (though you have to request the chicken hearts).  You don't get to ask them what to bring but you also do.  Like, they will bring you all 13 no matter what.  After that - or even during - you can ask that they bring some back.  We had them come back with bacon wrapped filet and parmesan crusted filet, too.

It starts off with the buffet.  You go up and choose stuff to eat that they have that day.  I made a salad with palm hearts and mini corn.  They had mussels and salmon an' other stuff like that, too.  Oh, and cheeses.  Once you're done with that, they take your plate and then bring out new plates and the first rounds of meat.  In between, they also bring out fries and fried bananas (which you can dip in chocolate if you ask for it) but it's mostly about the meat.  Once you're ready, you can order dessert.  It was pretty neat, actually, and totally worth the money.  We may go back there for my birthday (with less people ).
Flag homicidal_squirrel March 5, 2012 12:12 PM PST
They do pretty much the same exact thing as Texas De Brazil. Those types of places are good for especial occassions. They typically have awesome food. I'm partial to the beef steak ribs they serve. Freaking amazing.
Flag Zombie_Babies March 5, 2012 12:16 PM PST
I tried a little rib but I'm not a fan.  I did like their flank steak, though.  I'm kind of a elitist as far as beef cuts go so I was pretty surprised I liked it as much as I did.  It had a ton of flavor and the texture was pretty good.  They just know how to cook meat there, I guess.  But yeah, those places are cool.  Pretty different but not a gimmick.  The food is actually worth the money.
Flag homicidal_squirrel March 5, 2012 1:46 PM PST
Yeah, there are a couple of Brazilian steak houses down hre that are superb. There are also some Argentinian steak houses. Seriously, the amount of choice we have down here for food is out of hand. Some are more expensive than others, but dude... so worth it... like totally.
Flag draco1119 March 5, 2012 3:37 PM PST
There's a similar one in Long Beach, CA that I've been to once called Greenfield's.
Flag bone_naga March 5, 2012 5:36 PM PST
Sounds a bit pricey, but 14 kinds of meat sounds like heaven to me.
Flag Zombie_Babies March 6, 2012 8:39 AM PST
That's the thing, it's not really that pricey if you think about it.  Like, if I go to Roadhouse and get a filet (and it's decent, too - definitely worth the money) it'll cost me like $25 or so with a drink.  Not a beer, either.  Of course it comes with a salad, bread and potatoes.  Brasa was $40 and I had a salad.  Could have had fries or even salmon or a pork dish that I chose not to (wanted more room for the good stuff).  Anyhoo, I ate more than two filet's worth of filet and I had sirloin, pork loin, flank steak, ham and chicken hearts on top of it.  So, if you prep right and stick to the better meats, it really isn't all that bad price wise.  Oh, and don't drink a lot.  Drinks ain' cheap.  Beer isn't bad but my mojito was $9.  It was a killer mojito, though.
