well i looked over both the aranea & the drider. neither of them list stat adjustments. any idea what they would be? seems like there should be an adjustment for dex at least? the drider has some pretty visious scores:
Str 15, Dex 15, Con 16, Int 15, Wis 16, Cha 16
how should a character starting at level 1 and going up progress as a drider class and then a whatever class?
i'm looking at making a drow werespider as an NPC for the group i'm going to be starting. eventually. lol. he's going to be like drizzt in the fact that he's hunted by other drow for his leaving the "blessed". a group of werespiders just recently created in the hope of makeing stronger warriors/males. dark wizards perform the cerimonies to make the werespider eggs. they lack the spell-like abilities of normal drow. favored class is fighter. no spell resistance
this should drop them down to ECL +1 instead of +2
While in hybrid form they only posses 2 legs and 4 arms. In normal drow form they have the usual 2 legs and 2 arms.
it needs a lot of fleshing out but i can't really come up with much for ideas. my... brain... is...weak. lol
You might be surprised at what has been made available through online articles like this one. The article includes a couple of example entomanothropes, a vermin companion option for druids, and the entomanothrope template itself ("Entomanothropy Runs Wild").

Zauber's Mutable Rod: This rod has a number of useful functions that make it easier to live in the wilderness. It is made of polished wood, with five studlike buttons on one end. Each button produces a different effect when pressed. Unless otherwise noted, the rod’s functions have no limit on the number of times they can be employed. • When button 1 is pressed, one end of the rod produces a small flame, equivalent to a candle. • When button 2 is pressed, the rod unfolds into a two-person tent, complete with bedrolls and warm blankets. • When button 3 is pressed, the rod becomes a one-handed hammer, suitable for pounding pitons into a wall. • When button 4 is pressed, the rod becomes a sturdy iron spade. • When button 5 is pressed, the rod becomes a wooden bucket able to hold 2 gallons of liquid. Once per day, it can be commanded to fill with fresh water. If the rod is seriously damaged or broken in any of its alternate forms (button 2, 3, 4, or 5), it reverts to its basic rod form and cannot be activated for 24 hours. Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Rod, minor creation; Price 375 gp; Weight 2 lb.
You can also tweak the enetomanthrope into a "progression" using the same guidelines as the Savage Progressions lycanthrope articles. That would pretty much be the only way to play this from level 1. (3.x is notoriously bad at making player-character lycanthropes.)
Alternatively, the aranea and the drider are both in Savage Species, which straddled the conversion from 3e to 3.5, as full monster progressions. However, their high HD and LA tend to make it difficult for them to advance in traditional PC roles. Also, unlike Savage Progressions, the Savage Species progressions must be completed sequentially - you can't "take a few levels of aranea" and then advance as a fighter; you have to finish off the aranea progression.
This is also the reason why I hear "drow were[anything]" and "starting at level 1" and cringe. Drow have a +2 LA (although with your tweaks, they'd probably be a fine +1), lycanthropes add +1 or +2 on top of that (depending on whether they're afflicted or natural), and lycanthropes also come with a bunch of racial hit dice for their animal (or here, vermin) side. Assuming you went with the Large monstrous spider, applying that template as a natural entomanthrope to a first-level fighter (modified +1 LA) drow would result in a 5 HD creature with a +3 level adjustment, effectively on par with an 8th level character. (A Medium monstrous spider would result in a 3HD creature with a +3 level adjustment.)
