I decided to cobble together a few options for a ranged weapon style defender variant of the Fighter, let me know what you think. Class Features:
Show
When creating a Fighter you may choose the following class feature in place of Fighter Weapon Talent:
Watchful Eye Talent: When a marked enemy within 5 squares of you makes an attack against an ally you can make a Ranged Basic Attack against it as an immediate interrupt. In addition, you can use Strength instead of Dexterity for the attack and damage rolls of ranged basic attacks.
When creating a Fighter you may choose the following class feature in place of Combat Superiority:
Ranged Superiority: When a creature adjacent to you moves and you could make an opportunity attack against it, as an opportunity action you can make a Ranged basic attack against it at the end of that move action and is slowed until the end of its next turn. Powers:
Show
At-Will (Guardian's Shot) Fighter Lv.1 Martial, Weapon Strength Vs. AC Ranged Weapon Hit: 1[W] + Strength Modifier damage and the next time the target shifts before the end of its next turn you can make a ranged basic attack against it as an opportunity action. Special: This attack deals 2[W] + Strength Modifier damage at 21st level.
At-Will (Probing Shot) Fighter Lv.1 Martial, Weapon Strength Vs. AC Ranged Weapon Hit: 1[W] + Strength Modifier damage and your next melee attack against the target before the end of your next turn gains a +2 power bonus to the attack roll. Special: This attack deals 2[W] + Strength Modifier damage at 21st level.
Note: The Fighter powers Sure Strike and Crushing Surge are now "Ranged or Melee Weapon".

I like it, and looks really solid. Nothing extreme or "too new" here. You kept it clean and made it work, that's more than many homebrewers can do, most of us tend to overdo things xD
Search "The Harrier" on the forums, it is a ranged defender class that has a good discussion of the varius aspects of being a ranged defender.
I'd like to see what kind of character concepts can be made with this, I've yet to think of any.
What is the goal of this defender? Some fighters stack defenses and HP, making them meatshields, other go mobile, some try to be as sticky as possible. What does being a ranged weapon user bring to the table?

Remember Last of the Mohicans? When Hawkeye and his buddies are droppin' baddies while a messenger escapes the fort? Or Mr. and Mrs. Smith when they're in the home store? I like the idea of playing a character that shoots enemies in the face as they're swinging on my allies. Don't know how much of a 'concept' it is, but it sounds fun.
Also, I reworked that Harrier build a bit, gonna try to play it sometime.
Wizards of the Coast can suck it.

Well, since originally there was a lot of hate for the lack of a ranged fighter option, and I wanted to try making a defender focused around ranged weaponry, I decided to add a few side options to the Fighter class.
The sort of concept I came up with is like the sniper who shoots down things who get too close to his allies. Say, you're in the middle of a bit battle, when the ogre knocks you down. He's about to smash you with his club, when suddenly an arrow blasts right through his brain. Off to the side the ranged fighter gives you a thumbs up before going back to firing another salvo.
