This sounds really cool, this was what they meant by doing something with a campaign setting that had not been done before, competitive play setting. Its backed up with drow fortune cards of treachery and the dungeon survival guide which will have underdark PC races, including gobliniods, themes, and a how to use section for DMs.

This sounds like an awesome combo, it also goes well with HOS and Dark Pact Warlocks.

I'm still not clear on what's actually going to be in this.  The fact that they're calling it "Edition Neutral" implies a lack of concrete mechanics.  How are they planning on making edition neutral fortune cards?  How will you have edition neutral races and themes?

I think that what they're doing is putting all of the 4e crunch into the Dungeon Survival Guide and keeping the Menzoberranzan book more like a DM/player guide to running a drow themed campaign. Whatever crunch is in the menzo book will probably be campaign mechanics that don't rely on 4e rules. For example there could be some sort of reputation tracking system to figure out your rep with each of the Drow houses. Stuff like that adds crunch but is edition neutral. I would expect that any necessary new monsters and traps and other DM side crunch will probably be released via DDI, although there's been so much underdark/Drow stuff released already you probably don't need it.

My big question is paragon or heroic? The original plan for 4e was for the underdark to be all paragon, then the underdark book watered that down somewhat by adding "The Shallows". Lately it seems like  95% of WotC releases for 4e is heroic. If they plan on making the Menzoberranzan stuff heroic tier, then they're going to have to release a slew of heroic tier drow and their allies/enemies (ex. Mindflayers).

The current edition is BECMI, the most popular form of Basic D&D and the adventure is the classic Red Box quest to kill Bargle the evil magic user. Check it out, learn about the games roots, and enjoy the story as it unfolds.
