How new would re published campaign settings have to be ? meaning, would a smaller book with just the rules for a campaign be sufficient? it would introduce the classes, races, monsters, and special rules for the campaign setting. and then basically saying see the X edition campaign setting for the history and description of the world. or would you want them seeing advancing time lines and making changes to the setting to make it fit 5th edition. many people complained when they made changes to FR to make it fit 4th edition
for example a splat/optional rule book would be introduced. It would have new player races like Giff ,Grommam ,Hadozee And rules for flying vessels that could travel between worlds. to a player who does not know about spelljammer this might just look like a interesting splat book. to a spelljammer fan it would be clear that if you combine this book with the old spelljammer campaign setting you now have 5th edition spelljammerr.

I have played deep adventures in most of these settings... Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Dark Sun, Dragonlance, Greyhawk, Al Quadim, SpellJammer, and Planescape and I can confirm each campaign setting has a different feel and atmosphere. These are powerful campaigns, and should not just be tossed in the garbage and forgotten about.

Gods no. No more damned retcons, for one thing.
If you want something like that, have one core world, like in 4e, and then have a spelljammer type thing that connects the other worlds.
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.

Forgive the grim or macabre sense of urgency, but I feel Ravenloft must be one of the first. It was the first weorld I payed in, and it is the reason why I got into D&D in the first place. I can recall entire timelines that I have played in that realm, spanning hundreds of years between characters, and while most fans will want Greyhawk first, I would disagree. In order of my favorites, and the order I personally think they should be released: 1. Ravenloft 2. Forgotten Realms 3. Darksun 4. Kara-tur 5. Planescape 6. Spelljammer 7. Underdark In addition, I would also like to see a fresh and inspiring new setting, vastly different in as many ways as are managable. You know... purple skies that aren't filled with dragons, and caves that aren't 99% goblin infested... lol. But seriously, a new campaign setting would be nice.
Please people. don't give up on the classics. They can be reworked. That's what new editions are all about after all, and if we have serious input here, let's make it happen a way we, as DMs and as players, would enjoy fairly universally.

given the requests for something new I figured I'd float this little idea
Imagine a pristine world before the rise of it's first great empires, the various native sentients are just starting to gather into things that could be called towns with a straight face, and the dominate life forms are wild beasts that could step on your average 500 year old dragon, then someone drops a bunch of cities in the middle of it. Some incredibly inconsiderate catastrophe just swept its leftovers into the middle of a nice new world and walked off without so much as a nod.
So you've got a traditional DnD city in the middle of this unspoilt realm, and the local beasties have decided that wizards are delicious.
Oh did I mention the natives sentients aren't happy with them either, and while they may be primitive they have guys who hunt Cryanosaurus Rexes on their team, also they outnumber the city dwellers, by a lot, also their infrastructure isn't messed up.
