So I feel that a good indication of what will work for 5th edition is what worked best of previous editions comined with imagination and a few new ideas.

But how do the developers know what worked as a whole? I think we should all list the books that we've enjoyed over the years in various editions.

(Sorry if this has been done before, searched back two pages with no results)

If you wish to, put reasons by the books, but if you just like the whole book then just list it.

Me:

3.0 Monster Manual I/II - I really like the desriptions of the creatures in these books. The art wasn't bad either

3.5 Expanded Psionics - this system for psionics was interesting and I liked how it didn't use spell slots

3.5 Draconomicon - The art and detailed descriptions of the ecology of dragons made this book for me

Tome of Shadow (even if it was underpowered and truenamers were just poor) - I really enjoyed the Binding and Shadow magic sections of this book. Both were interesting concepts that were never fully explored in 4e

Tome of Battle: the Book of Nine Swords - IMHO, this books class mechanics were better than the entire of 4th edition's class system. I know it was the basis for the power system in 4e, but I enjoyed playing Swordsage more than any 4e class.

Forgotten Realms Players Guide}
Ebberon Players Guide                   } - the major successes of 4e IMO. The players guides were very well done
Dark Sun Players Guide                }

3.5 Book of Nine Swords. Swordsage was my favorite class in 3.5.

2e AD&D:
Dungeon Survival Guide
Wilderness Survival Guide - The information contained in these two books was remarkably useful for both GMs and players alike.

Planescape Box Set - How to do a campaign setting well. It worked to immerse you in the setting from the get-go

3.x Edition:
Tome of Magic - Some of the worst classes in the game, but matched by some of the best presentation IMO.

4th Edition:
Player's Handbook Races: Dragonborn - This little gem was a nice little experiment in expanding on the background of a race. Having it made playing a dragonborn that bit more special because it allowed you to expand, not just on your class, but on your race.

1st ed: Unearthed arcana, PHB, DMG, MM, fiend folio, dragonlance setting book, dieties nad demigods.
2nd ed: PHB, DMG, the complete x series, stronghold builders guide, Dragonlance boxed set, Dragonmountian boxed set.
3rd ed: I bought it I played it I never cared for the "if your not a spellcaster..." feel.
4th: PHB, MM, & many of the other books prior to 8/2010. I own every book released to that point, after that point there was nothing worth my coin. I despise the "retro" design with a passion.

There are a lot of things TSR did wrong with the system, mostly due to "she" but even they had the knoledge to place casters on a different XP chart from non casters.
