I like the older oil painted stuff. 3e and 4e's just hasn't been very appealing to me, especially with the asymetric slab armor that springs up everywhere. What do you WANT 5e art to be like? What do you think 5e art will be like? But hell, if I had a candle of invocation, I'd want it to look like Vagrant Story/Final Fantasy Tactics/Ogre Battle heh.

While I don't really care about the artwork, I'd give Wayne Reynolds a lot of work.
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

I also love the older stuff. Elmore, Caldwell, etc. Some great art there. I also like Lockwood's stuff though.

I am a big fan of the art from the Eberron products, Brom's work on Dark Sun, the old 2e color paintings (not the ugly black and white prints), and the artwork from Pathfinder. Even though I like 4e, I have disliked much of its artwork. Then again, that is true of 3e as well (at least in terms of artwork. I didn't like the system very much). All of the artwork above looks nice too, except for the artwork on the red box. I hate to say it, but I am not a big fan of that one...

I find that I generally prefer artwork that looks natural. It doesn't need to be photorealistic, but the highly stylized stuff with bizarre proportions and/or where everything is angular enough to slash your eyeballs open when you look at it... no.
Fortunately, there's been relatively little of the latter in 4E, but some old-E material was inundated with it.

Not like 4e art. I wasn't a fan of 4e art, and I wasn't a fan of the 4e format in books. While I enjoyed playing it, something of the spirit did seem missing when I turned the pages.

OP: I like the pics you posted. The starter set pic I pretty much only like out of nastolgia, though. 4e does have some really good art, it just isn't in the PHB. :P Seriously, though, while I agree that 4e art is largely too cartoonish and lame. The various art threads in Astrid's Parlor have a ton of good examples of what people would like to see. I'll link to them at the end of the post. for my preferences:

This one hits me right. The class it's depicting might suck, but the pic is cool.

For something different,
Some would complain about the boob window, but whatever, it's an example of an art style.
This is one of my favorites from 4e. Perfectly encapsulates a character archetype, and is pretty sweet as just a picture to look at. That's what I want from art going forward.
Good for a party that is all along a similar theme. Pics like this are cool. I wouldn't mind groups shots with context like this at the start of chapters.
Another example:

I LOVE this picture. There's a sense of movement and power that not all artists can capture.
Who are the good guys, and who the bad? If the guys in front are good guys, I want more like this. Hell, either way. I love art that tells a story, or at least suggests one.
My favorite art of a drow, ever. Deadly beauty, done without cheesy exhaggeration.
That cape! Holy crap! More like that. I want to see magical gear of the kind presented in Heroes of the Feywild, where it doesn't have magical powers, but it's magical in a more fairy tale kind of way. Like a cloak of feathers. I see that, and I start thinking about what could be special about that cloak. That is cool.
Also, elf that just hunted that dragon. I'm into it.
This one is from PF, I think, and it's great. This artist deserves more work, definately.
Harflings! (as my former roomate called them.) This guy is cool. His hair is...there, but the rest of the image is supremely cool. That guy is on his way to kick some ass. Awesome.[/quote]

I think that provides a pretty damn good review of DnD art.
Warning; It's a LOT of art.
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.

I've bought gaming books (that I never even played) because they had awesome (and consistent and consistently awesome) artwork throughout. It would behoove WotC to shell out the cash up front for highly professional (and accessable) art that is consistent and stylistically integrated within any one book or set of books. They should also realize that full color is neither necessary nor even desirable on every page.
Favorites: Michael Whelan, Brom, Olivia, Rowena, Boris Vallejo.
