The core doesn't need a cosmology. Make references to various planar locations, but let individual DMs figure out it all comes together. Then have a Manual of the Planes that presents multiple possible cosmologies, including the Great Wheel. Then release the Planescape campaign setting that fleshes out the Great Wheel more.

I am hoping that the 4e cosmology dies with 4e, I think the original D&D pantheon and the original cosmology should be default in 5e with a set of modular options for any pantheon you want.

In the D&D XP session today Rob Schwalbe stated that he wants a return to the Great Wheel cosmology. There was no official statement that this would be done, but he is one of the three lead designers.
Personally I've come to think that the cosmology should be an optional module. Keep the core devoid of any concrete references to cosmology so each DM can use their previous edition books as they see fit.

The current edition is BECMI, the most popular form of Basic D&D and the adventure is the classic Red Box quest to kill Bargle the evil magic user. Check it out, learn about the games roots, and enjoy the story as it unfolds.

Strangely, the big fear this gives me is that alignment will be coming back. The cosmology itself doesn't concern me much, but the return of alignment as being important disgusts me beyond measure.
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.

I just hope that if they bring back the Wheel of Extraneous Things, it isn't that important, so that my workload isn't too great when I inevitably get rid of it in every campaign I run.
More sex and gender equality and racial equality shouldn't even be an argument--it should simply be an assumption for any RPG that wants to stay relevant in the 21st century.
I could say anything in D&D is silly though, because it's a silly game and we are silly people.

Well assuming that you end up switching. I actually think that the planes should be a campaign thing either left out, or the DMG gives a few optional ones to choose from, like the 4th ed's, the great wheel, Eberron's Orrery, or basic's multiple dimensions (which is actually probably my favorite).

I like the 4e cosmology as a base. The Great Wheel should be an option that I can ignore. I want alignment and planar metaphysics to stay divorced--they're happier that way.

I'd be totally happy with having a fairly paired down "cosmos" in the core books, with a manual of the planes that detailed a couple big cosmologies, maybe a second one later on.
And yeah, assuming I switch.
Every time we get new info, I fluctuate between optimism and....a sort of sinking anxiety.

Well, that certainly explains what Todd Stewart is doing writing for WotC!

I'm working on a small 4e project. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.
Nobody has approached me wrt anything 5e, but I wouldn't object if they did. Please?
